VLC - Only Video Player that works in Win8

Recently upgraded to Windows 8 on a Sony laptop being used as a stream-box, but the only video player that displays an image is VLC. Not even Windows Media Player or the Media Center. Even the Win8 Netflix app doesn't display any video.

I've checked all drivers, upgraded the video drivers, but no solution. There are no issues in Device Manager. Just updated to the latest version of K-lite - no change. Media Player Classic does not work.

Any video played in a browser (e.g. youtube) works just fine. Even Netflix via browser works fine. My other computer with Windows 8 has zero issues like this.

Help?

Your codecs are messed up which is the risk you take when installing third-pary ones. VLC has its own built in codecs so it is unaffected. Flash and Silverlight will also be unaffected.

I disagree. I do not think this is a codec issue. It didn't work after first install of Win8, so I thought it was a codec issue - installed K-lite. Still does not work.
