VLC issue

When I fast forward most videos in VLC media player the image gets all distorted/pixelated for about 5 seconds then returns to normal. If I open the video up in WMP and fast forward/skip it seems to work fine (leading me to believe it's not an issue with the video files). Anyone know why this happens and how I can fix it?
