Hi all,

I'm looking into improving our current network setup at work, the main idea is to separate our 30 IP cameras / 10+ VOIP telephones and general data traffic onto there own VLANs. I have not really delved into vlans before but have an ok knowledge of networking.

My first question is would it be a good idea to separate the traffic onto there own vlans?

And secondly i have been looking at a couple of managed switches to play around with but not to sure what to go for.

I thought maybe it would be good to go with something like a cisco perhaps or a cheaper alternate was a TP Link smart switch which doesnt have all the features of a cisco but is obviously cheaper.

Appreciate any advice and thanks a mill!

You can set up vlans on most any switch. However, you'll want one that incorporates Layer 3 capabilities to route traffic between those VLANs. The Cisco has those, by the looks of it. As near as I can tell, the TPLink one doesn't.

You can also use an external router, but now you have to buy two boxes.

If you've never done router configuration before, you're in for a treat. I don't, as a rule, like recommending Cisco hardware, mostly for anti-monopoly reasons. But there are a LOT of tutorials online for configuring their stuff to do exactly what you're after, so it's probably your best bet.

Many thanks for that will have a look at some tutorials on YouTube for setting up ciscos.

How is the ten port switch going to cover your needs?

In short in won't at all but I'm only looking at these two switches above purely for training and playing around purposes before I do anything
