Vizio 37"-42"

My wife and I got our new bedroom suite yesterday (we just bought a house a week ago). The armoire we bought can hold up to a 42-47" TV, but we would like to keep it under 42" because of the budget.

When it comes to these size TV's, do I really need a 1080p tv? I will have a PS3 hooked up to it as well as Verizon FIOS HD. Thoughts?

So should I go with a nicer 720p (with 1080i) or a lesser 1080p? We will most likely be watching HD tv from FIOS 90% of the time on it. I will be playing games a bit on the PS3 and the occasional Blu-Ray.....

At that size there probably aren't too many decent 720p sets, and definitely none that are $600 and would be preferable to the Dynex. If you were looking at 50", then you might be able to find a nice deal on a 50" 720p plasma.

The only negative to 1080p is price, and at 42" that doesn't seem to be an issue.

I have no idea how good the following sets are, but the prices seem good:

$800: SHARP AQUOS 42" 16:9 6ms 1080p LCD HDTV LC-42D65U (deal ends today)
$1,000: SHARP 46" 16:9 6ms 1080p LCD HDTV LC46SB54 (deal ends Friday)

If you get a lesser set with 1080p you'll be unhappy. If you have to go 720p to get a good quality TV then do it.

personally I'd go 1080p because the price difference is very minimal if not zero right now on some models. That is if you are not cheaping out on the quality. For example, 720p Samsung > 1080p Vizio

Can I say both? I just wonder if I am going to use 1080p to it's full potential if I "rarely" watch Blu-Rays on it...since it will be in my bedroom.....as far as I know, FIOS HD doesn't broadcast in full 1080p....right?

True, but since every station except for FOX & NBC broadcasts in 1080i, the 1080p sets are best if you are looking for the best picture.

Have you gone and compared the 720p sets to the 1080p models in the size you want? Perhaps you can live with a 720p model.

I managed to get a 40" Samsung 1080p set for $848 locally a couple weeks ago. You have to do your shopping around and excellent deals can be had.

I've seen 1080p 42" Plasma sets for ~$950

I saw this 42" Samsung Plasma (PN42B430) at BJs today for $699 but it's 720p. Is this a great deal because you guys are saying that 1080p sets are similarly priced right now... ? Can you point out some samples? I want to pull the trigger for Mother's Day.

EDIT>> buydig has it for $719 no tax/ship. which comes out cheaper than BJs w/ tax. Amazon still charges tax here in NY for some reason...

I would say as long as you're at least 6 feet away, that no 42" at $700 will look better than that plasma.

You're looking at a set that is not in the new series and is a marketed at more of an entry level. That's not bad, but current line/higher products from the same manufacturer will be pricier.

It's a good set though. Although I'd try to spend more and get a Panasonic myself.

What I'm saying is 1080p in current market products is as cheap as 720p. For example...a Samsung 40" 720p(LN40A450) LCD is $899 from amazon. The LN40B550 1080p Samsung 40" LCD is $934. So for $35 bux you have a 1080p set.

There are differences between the A and B line, but if 1080p is a feature you want you don't have to spend over $1000.
