VIVO GPU or TV Tuner?

Hello,

I wonder, is it enough to have a video-in on a graphics card to be able to hook up a VCR, and watch and capture video? Or does one have to have a TV tuner card? And if so, what is the purpose of a video-in?

Thats all you need for hardware, you'll just need proper capture drivers and software installed and you'll be set. I did exactly that with my Radeon VIVO and Phillips VCR, worked very well and used the VCR remote to change channels.

I have also done this with a Rage VIVO card and it was pretty cool. I have an All-in-Wonder card that I keep hooked up to a VCR all the time in my kids room so she can watch her videos or TV or whatever. I wish I would have known that all I needed was a VIVO card instead of the All-in-Wonder that I purchased because I could have saved some $$$.

I have the ATI Radeon 64MB w/ViVo, and the VCR, but what is the proper capture card drivers, and software that I need ? I have the CD that came with the Radeon graphics card, is what I need on it ? I don't want to spend money for a TV tuner card, if your method works. I would be greatful for any help with getting the drivers, and software I need.

i want to connect my directv receiver to my computer for watching and recording. do i need a tv-tuner card, or is a vidcard with vivo enough?

All you need is MMC and the Drivers from the CD for it to work on your Radeon VIVO, but I'd go to ATI and download MMC 7.6 and the latest supported drivers and the capture drivers.

Then with your VIVO card, you just hook the composite video(yellow rca)output of the VCR into the Radeon's composite video-input, and hook the composite(rca) audio-out of the VCR into your soundcard's line-in. You can capture video or watch the VCR's output with the MMC Video-in application.

Same with your Direct TV or Digital Cable box, just hook the video-output of the tuner box into the Video input of your VIVO card and the audio output into your soundcards line-in.

My setup: I have Regular Cable, Digital Cable and a VCR for my Video sources. I hook the cable line from the wall into my AIW 7500 tuner via the Coax cable, this gives me access to all the analog channels using the AIW's tuner. I then hook my Digital Cable tuner into my VCR via composite A/V and then from the VCR into my AIW via the composite A/V inputs on my AIW's breakout box. This gives me access to all the Analog and Digital channels using the remote for my Cable Box, and access to my VHS tapes through my VCR.

Although the AIW makes it easier, and offers a higher quality s-video input(if you can make use of it), I used my VIVO for quite some time with my VCR's tuner, and it worked quite well.

With the VCR setup and a Radeon VIVO, how do I get sound? Is there a special cable I need that has composite audio jacks on one end and a headphone style jack on the other for the sound card?
