Vivnedi is soooo wack.

Yesterday I went with my cousin to buy HL2 retail. I have the online version so this comes as a surprise to me. There is no booklet. NO Booklet! Amazing. 55 dollars and they didn't even have to pay the technical writers. Money Hungry AssHles.

WTF do you need a booklet for? The game is point and shoot. It works just like very other FPS made in the last ten years.

FORWARD = W
BACKWARDS = S
LEFT STRAFE = A
RIGHT STRAFE = D
LEFT CLICK = SHOOT

Get back to me if your still stuck.

OK. Title will be fixed. I already hated Vivendi. But now...

I like a booklet. I enjoy reading them. And it should at least have been cheaper if they didn't include a booklet.

I got your back on this rant man!

I bet the bastards gave you paper sleeves for your CDs too!

It costs less than a buck to print a cd + jewel case + full color insert. Somehow you end up with jack sh1t for your 50 bucks.

They pulled the same crap with the last game I bought from them (Tribes:Vengeance). For once I was finally able to get back at them. I bought HL2 from steam 😀

I hate to jump on the boat with the "No printed documentation makes me angry" crowd, but I have to agree. World of Warcraft came with a nice big fat manual. EverQuest II (Collector's Edition, anyway) came with a nice big fat manual and art book (Got it at GameStop for $39.99, so please don't use the 'but its $89.99!' argument). Is it too much to ask to have a solid plastic case that probably costs fifteen to thirty cents to fabricate to hold my CD along with at least a thirty page booklet that reviews basic elements of gameplay and just maybe lists the game's development team? If you don't do it for the consumer, at least do it for the dev team so they can have a little pride...

The worst is the combination of "paper sleeve rather than a jewel case" + "Use this CD key and never ever lose it for the life of the product" = "you gotta hang on to piece of paper/trash for years"

FIFTY-FIVE dollars!!!!!!!!
($55)
😛

that's retail and HL2's been out for MONTHS
(i got mine for $37 the first week) 😛

You must never visit Hot Deals forum . . . . HL2 is going everywhere (except walmart) for $39.

edit: either that or you don't like your cousin very much 😉
(you did get that nice little card with the mini instructions?! . . . at least it was printed in color and on cardstock) 😛

Yes, no booklet, paper sleeves, a color advertisement and this POS white paper that tells you what happens if you install HL2 without installing CS as well.

I remember the good ol' days (not quite that old for some of the senior members, but for me), where you'd get a nice bookelt with every game purchase. Heck, I've got a couple sitting around here (for older flight sims) that are longer than some novels. Even the games that didn't require these extensive references (the instant gratification kind) still included a nice glossy coloured manual with a few pages outlining settings, playing the game, and troubleshooting. Now to cut costs they're curtailing this practice

But if my major gripe with HL2 is lack of a manual, that still makes it one hell of a game =)

Personally, i think the publisher isn't exploiting it enough if they want to maximize profits. There should be downloadable manuals including walkthroughs for a fee for those who want it and even upgrades and HL-related product thru the mail. 😉
(and a bare-bones setup for cheapskates like me that is discounted even further)

It does many things that are not normal for every other FPS and comes with a whole nother game, CS:S, which it has no little orange card for. There are a thousand things they could have put in the booklet that would have been useful, but instead they told us to figure it out. Fvck them, I'm never buying from them again.

Over a piece of paper you would have glanced at and thrown away? Makes sense to me...

BTW, I don't like Vivendi, but I can't bring myself to care about the lame attempt at a manual they would have produced if people like you had their way.

The point is that if you are going to spend $55, you shouldn't be getting unfinished software in paper cases and no manual.

EQ2 and WoW are totally different, for them a manual is necessary to know what to do and what there is to do in the game.
FPS are slightly different.
Move, shoot.

If you REALLY want a manual, one is provided on the disk. You can even print it out and read it at your convienence. Do you really need another useless piece of garbage packaged with your FPS? A jewel case would have been nice, I mean putting 5 disks in paper sleeves is BS as far as I'm concerned, seeing how much they charge for the software.

Heh, I saw it for $55 at Gamestop yesterday, but the collectors edition was on sale for limited time for only $50. Not bad, considering the MSRP on it was $70. (see edit)

I picked up the CE.

EDIT: Actually, MSRP on it is $80! What a rip.

Ill back the OP on this as well. I could understand this if the savings were being passed onto the consumers. Im sure printing full color booklets aren't that cheap, althought Im sure they're not that expensive. But we aren't seeing any of the money back. Not to mention that I always love reading the manuals. Controls are usually learned but the most manuals give nice tidbits of storyline as well as character dialouges and pictures. Its just nice to have. Now if I could forgo the manual and cd case to save $10 on my purchase price I would. In a heartbeat.
