It's about 60 million. So a little over 5% of France is homosexual. Doesn't seem like much out of the norm, or is it?

This did catch my attention though:

Homophobic remarks will be punishable with prison and fines under a draft law expected to be debated in parliament before the year's end.

Completely ridiculous, IMO.

The US seems to be at least 5-10 years behind (depending on your view) some European countries in terms of homosexual topics.

Pretty normal, I had guesstimated a much lower population, my own fault. Probably not the best thing to happen for the media image of homosexuals though.

WTF?????

Excuse me for pointing out that this is not exclusive to gays, that would be my point, is there any need to defend France for having a gay sex channel?

A bit touchy, aren't you?

I don['t think these elements are really stereotypes as much as they are accureate generalization. I mean, c'mon, living in Berkeley, I see gay people all the time, and they largely fullfill that image.

Wow - that's funny, because I am gay and I can confidently say that you're wrong.

now now... no need to get testy... i'm well aware that generalizations don't apply to everyone of a particular segment, and you are very well and exception. BUt my point is, take a walk down Castro Street, Berkeley, Long Beach, San Francisco and many other places where gay people congregate and you'll more likely than not see a fairly developed subculture depicted by the rainbow flag. And yes... i've lived in all those areas.

Umm no. There is some gay oriented programming but certainly is a lot of strait stuff to.

Up here in the great white north the is the Pride channel. I pretty sure it is "gay" oriented.

I think the stereotype is furthered because people assume any man with a deep voice and who isn't effeminate is straight. In reality probably a very small percentage of gay men fit the flamboyant, effeminate stereotype. Same with pot smokers, many laymen have the mental image of spaced-looking, smelly hippie types with long hair, assuming that those who don't look the part don't toke up, when in reality the majority of smokers look normal and are assumed by the layman to not smoke. For obvious reasons, most gays, pot smokers, and others in similar situations don't go out of their way to let strangers know what they do, and the cycle continues.
