The reason the defaults are the way they are is because they are the best solution for the most amount of people. They work for the most amount of people. Most people don't tweak. It works out nicely.

If they're tweaking enough to need to mess with these settings, they should probably know what they are doing.

merely provide the settings most likely to work correctly.

That's what I said, just less eloquently. ;) aka. Not disagreeing with you.

Does the configured MTU really matter with Path MTU Discovery?

Hmmm

edit: just more off-topic here.

I don't get it? Some people misconfigure their firewalls to drop ICMP and we're supposed to ignore Path MTU discovery?

Do you really need a microsoft document to tell you that fragmented file systems reduce disk performance?

Just pointed out there are situations where even with PMTU you can still have issues. It's always better to know what the settings for your systems/network is rather than trusting/hoping the OS/device defaults will work correctly.

My fault as well, I'm still used to forums that puts the reply to in the reply header.

Of course human ignorance will get in the way of good technologies, but that doesn't really mean I should worry about those lowly settings on my home network. I'm not a tweaker, things work fine the way they're setup. :)
