Vitamin supplements

I was at work today, thinking about how abyssmal my diet is. I mean really, truly, horrible. So I was thinking, along with a change in diet, would taking vitamin supplements really help?

I've always heard that they don't digest well, so I was thinking of getting a powerful blender. I would add fruits, vegetables, etc and actually put the vitamin tablets in the blender. Would that do any good? Would a smoothie with finely-ground up vitamin supplements have any benefit whatsoever?

What kinds of vitamins. You could just buy a basic mulit vitamin like a one-a-day.

The fact that most vitamins don't digest well has nothing to do with their physical properties. It has to do with their chemical properties which will not be affected by blending.

Will a smoothie with finely ground up vitamin supplements have any benefit? Depending on the contents of the smoothie, yes. Will the vitamin supplemenent help? Depends on the vitamin. The cheap vitamins pretty much run through one's system and pass out the other end without being absorbed by the body.

Interesting. I always thought that the chief complaint with multi-vitamins was that the tablet itself didn't digest well.

What multi-vitamins do you recommend?

Just go to your local grocery store or Target or Walmart and pick up some Joe Schmo multi vitamins.

Where'd you hear that? The acid in your stomach will digest the vitamin just fine.

Vitamins aren't feel good pills. They're only going to help if your diet is atrocious. Like, never eat veggies, EVER. I take one every day just in case, cause my diet isnt very good, but you don't NEED it.

And if you're going to blend it into the smoothy, you might as well leave the vitamins out...the smoothy probably has more than enough already.

Just make sure you get the multi-vitamin with no iron in it.

Why is a MV with iron in it bad?

Your body has a tough time removing excess iron from it's body. Too much = bad. But it's not bad for you - you need it, your body stores it etc - just one of the easier vitamins to OD on. I'd still get one with iron in it, unless you are a carnivore.

Ah ok. I don't eat meat so I take a MV with iron; actually, I just take my daily vitamin about a minute before you made your post so I got a bit worried 😛

If you don't eat meat, you should most definitely be taking a multivitamin.
