Vitamin C

I've already got a full-blown cold going on right now and I'm wondering if I can help fight it off by loading up on Vitamin C. Could it work even though I've already got the cold?

It might help a little bit, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to start taking some to keep the immune system stronger in the future.

Yeah, I really do have to start taking vitamins regularly. It seems for the past few months, I've been sick every weekend.

It certainly can't hurt... Any excess vitamin C that your body can't use will just get pissed out anyway. (Note that this is not the case with all vitamins.)

Nope, I have a terrible immune system. Taking vitamin C like crazy right now.

Studies have shown that it doesn't do as much as the media tells us it does, but if you start taking it now, you'll be healthier for one or two more days a year.

What you really want to be taking now is Zinc, I am not kidding you will notice the effects immediately. Get some 45mg Zinc pills and take one in the morning and one at night when sick, and regularily one in the morning. Also if you have a sore throat they can be grinded up and put into warm water and gargled, it really helps.

Also try and get your vitamin C from lots of orange juice, you need lots of fluids.

I'm drinking lots of bottled water and takign Vitamin C ever once in a while during the day. I don't think I have any Zinc, but I'll pick some up for next time.

Thanks. 🙂

 That's why most people find Cold-Ezee works, it has a lot of zinc in it.

I took 2000MG's of Vit C at once about an hour ago, shouldn't my urine be yellow? It's still transparent.

your urine is yellow only when you're de-hydrate. Transparent urine is a good sign that your body is well hydrate.

False; B vitamins will turn your urine yellow.

I don't think Vitamin C does this, so you're in the normal zone.

Yeah...zinc cuts down on the duration of the cold. Last time I starting feeling like I was going to get a cold, I took some Zicam Cold Remedy RapidMelts. They don't taste that great, but they are supposed to shorten the duration of the common cold. I think that they helped me.

Vitamin C is an essential antioxidant that we've documented.

Realize that common vitamins and minerals account for a very small percentage of nutrients, and that there are nutrients found in whole foods that are dozens of times more powerful than Vitamin C. Most can only be consumed from whole, fresh fruits, vegetables and grains. Juices, white flour, and other processed junk only contains a small amount of the flavonoids.

For example, the apple:

The total antioxidant activity of 100 grams of whole apple (with the peel) was found to be equivalent to the antioxidant effect of about 1500 mg of vitamin C. (However, the amount of vitamin C in 100 g of apples is only about 5.7 mg. Nearly all of the antioxidant activity from apples comes from a variety of other compounds.)

A type of pigment in apples that helps provide their color, flavonoids have been extensively researched and found to help prevent heart disease. Researchers in Finland followed over 5,000 Finish men and women for over 20 years. Those who ate the most apples and other flavonoid rich foods (such as onions and tea), were found to have a 20% lower risk of heart disease than those who ate the least of these foods.

Apples have been singled out as one of the small number of fruits and vegetables that contributed to the significant reduction in heart disease risk seen in a recent meta-analysis of seven prospective studies. Of the more than 100,000 individuals who participated in these studies, those who diets most frequently included apples, tea, onions, and broccoli?the richest sources of flavonoids?gained a 20% reduction in their risk of heart disease.

In animal studies, apples have also been shown to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol while raising beneficial HDL cholesterol.

But juice lacks the benefits:

However, processing apples into juice greatly lowers their phytochemical content. Apple juice obtained from Jonagold apples by pulping and straight pressing had only 10% of the antioxidant activity of fresh apples, while juice obtained after pulp enzyming had only 3% of fresh apples' antioxidant activity. The take home message: store apples in the refrigerator and enjoy a sweet, crunchy, whole apple at least 2-3 times each week.

Don't consume more than 500 mg at once because there were studies showing that more than that much acts as an oxidant.

Those who think that if a little vitamin C is good, more must be better should think again, says a team of British researchers, who found that a supplement of 500 milligrams a day could damage people's genes.

However, I don't think consuming anything would really speed up recovery, unless you're one of those people that has colds for weeks. The idea with proper nutrition is to never have the cold in the first place.
