They take a vitamin everyday, does that mean it doesn't really what their diet is? Even if this person doesn't eat vegetables, fruits, etc etc..?

Uhhhh... how does a vitamin provide proteins, sugars, calories, fats, carbs, etc?

if you come up with one, lemme know.. i hate vegetables and don't each much fruit.
but you can get those kind of things from just about any food.. it's the specific things, such as assorted amino acids, that we vegetable haters are missing out on. I know full well what the problem is, but the only thing I can do with vegetables is hope I don't gag on the shit that's in MREs. I full well cannot eat them fresh out of the garden or supermarket, but thankfully MREs everything is mixed together.. Many of them don't taste too bad, and would only taste better if I could get myself past some ingredients. However, certain MRE's I'll just smash on. Pretty tasty and chock full o' everything.

Yeah I'm still waiting for the "pill" meals.
Its funny watching old video from the worlds fairs of 30 years ago where they show machines you just walk up to and get a pill thats the same as a meal.

Well its for my brother, he's mentally "different" and ONLY eats:

Hot Dogs
PBJ Sandwiches
Ham Sandwiches
Ravioli
Chips
Vanilla Pudding/Ice Cream
Chicken Nuggets (McDonalds only)
French Fries (McDonalds 95%)
Emense amounts of katchup (60% of an entire bottle for 1 serving of McDonalds fries, the Heinz plastic bottle, not the small glass bottle).

That (above) is EVERYTHING, and I'm not even slightly kidding, this has been his ONLY diet for 17 years and believes his daily "vitamin" will save him from a health crisis. He's over 240lbs, and is mentally disabled and refuses to even talk or listen to anyone about this situation.

He has NOT and will never try any new foods. No fruits, no vegetables... Not even to try sweets like Chocolate, pie, cake, cupcakes, cookies! (I admit he has had a few cookies in his day)..

It's screwed up, he's screwed up, but I need to somehow tell him that his mentality in this issue is completely f*&(cked up. Somehow in a way that doesn't send him into a physical rage of anger with me, a elementary 5th grade explanation, a very easy to understand website with graphics, something! Me just telling him just invites anger and him not to listen...

The stuff he is eating is so loaded with fat, preservatives, and 'bad' food items that he's going to be a candidate for health problems at an early age if thats all he is eating.

No vitamin can correct that.

If you get the channel BBC america, there is a show that runs on there called "you are what you eat". The woman goes to people's houses in england, where the people are overweight, tired, having health issues and helps them to understand why fast food, energy drinks, and junk food are killing them.
Link to the show:

Looks like its running everyday at 11 and 11:30 est.

My wife has a sister in a similar situation. Her sister is autistic. She's 21 but functions mentally at about a 5th grader level.

Her parents were horrible enablers when it came to food. They let her drink chocolate milk by the gallon. Chips. Pizza. Calorie dense things by the bucket full. She's a big girl at 6', but she's also decking in at over 250.

They don't make her exercise, and they don't want to upset her by "making" her eat better.

She'll have a stroke or a heart attack by the time she's 40 at this rate.

I wish I had an answer for you, but the precident was set a long time ago. It's hard to go back.

It's an odd thought, but maybe talk to a pedatrician (since that's the mental age we are working with) and see if they have suggestions on how to encourage better eating habits? You have to be creative, compassionate, and reasonable in the way you approach it. Maybe somebody that works with kids on a daily basis would have some helpful advice.

Balanced diet in moderation + exercise + plenty of rest + stress management. A few cheat days/month is fine. You may not be able to get the rest & stress part, but there is no excuse for getting the 1st 2 right.

No. There's a hell of a lot more to nutrition than vitamins.

Tell that person they're ignorant, to get a nutrition textbook, and start reading.

I've heard of these freaks wot eat only a short list of vile junk food before. It's disturbing. I posit that vitties would help but not be a substitute for fruit 'n' veg (the latter especially). Apart from what is lacking, the other issue is teh negative effects from eating too much fat, processed sugar, white flour, preservatives, and mystery meat. Not much good food value there.

Since they are clearly a fat bastard their poor diet and activity are certainly killing 'em slowly. So the question is (given they are "differently enabled in the head") are you content contributing to their premature death so long as they are happy or do you reckon it is worth putting them through some short term "pain" in an effort for long term gain in quality and duration of life? It seems the same sort of problem many parents face with petulant children who lack an understanding on the balance betwixt long term needs and short term desires.

Cliffs: kill 'em slowly or break out the tough love
