I'm considering buying a new PC. Besides pictures and music and word documents, etc. what is important to save to my external to put onto my new PC? I have my bookmarks saved as well. Thanks.

you got most of them, the other stuff i look at is program specific stuff like itunes library, firefox profile, accounting program data(simply, quicktax etc) , email data files(outlook, thunderbird etc)

if you do gaming, saved games

Go with anything you think you need. Pretty much everything your your My Documents folder is all you really need. If your a gamer you may also want to transfer any saved games you may want.

I would be sure to copy over:

Word .doc / .docx
Excel .xls / .xlsx
Powerpoint .ppt
All my downloaded program installers
All my program License Keys (usually save them as text files)
but some come as .reg files.
As mentioned all pictures, music, Bookmarks from your browser
Anything that is personal like your financial records.
