visual studio .net OR KDE Kdevelop IDE?

I have taken a few programming courses and really want to master an IDE and vastly improve my programming skills so that I oneday may be able to develop commerical quality software products and work as a programmar. I am also learning *nix right now and noticed KDE comes with a integrated IDE that supports like 14 languages.

So which one should I really spend alot of time with familiarizing myself with? Are there pros and cons to each? From what I read, the KDE K develop is on par with visual studio .net, anyone know more?

It shouldn't matter. Get a firm grasp of programming concepts and you should have little difficulty transitioning to a new ide when the time comes. They are both very nice ides, if I had to pick one, I'd say kdevelop simply because you'll probably eventually use visual studio if you do become a developer, why not be exposed to something different before that time comes. But then I'm kinda weird like that.

It's true that learning the concepts is more important, you can always learn new IDEs and APIs as you need to.

Commerical client apps will almost all be written with visual studio or vs.net If you wanted to work on some Windows shareware they're a better choice. If you want to work on linux desktop apps for that much smaller makert then KDE.

Server apps could be either *nix with java, PHP, Perl, c -or- Windows with asp, .net (and maybe even java, PHP, perl) depending on the company. Linux/unix is much stronger on servers than desktops, so if you are interested in server-side programming linux-based development is a good choice.
