Visual Studio 6 Purchasing Options

The company I started working for is thinking about going into some windows programming (currently
they are Unix/SunOS/Linux based) The windows programming would only be to give the Unix program a
Windows interface for certain clients. I'm to look into the costs of buying software for this. I'll
also be the one doing most of this programming.

I've used VC++ 6 and VB before and I would think that they would be the best two things to do this
with. I have several questions.

1- My boss asked me if the programs made by the MS visual software have a fee to be payed for each
program sale (if I sold this one client program xx, do I have to buy a liscence every time I do
this?) I'm pretty sure the answer is no but I don't want find out later that I'm wrong.

2- Is there a difference between buying the retain and OEM Visual Studio versions. One one site I
found the OEM full for $269 and the retain full for $429
(http://www.cmishop.com/store/MainCategorySection.asp?CategoryID=18&display='false'). Is there any
difference between purchasing either of these?

3- I haven't found any sales including more licenses (like a 5 license version). I guess the is no
difference if you buy one box with 5 licenses and if you buy five single boxes, correct? If that is
true I'll go with whatever is the cheapest for 3-5 copies (I don't know how many they would want).

Replies answering some or none of these questions would be great. Thanx!

1) If you get at least the Professional edition (e.g. Not student or Learning edition) then you don't have to worry about distributing your programs for a fee.

2) I'm not really sure about this one. I got the retail version of Visual Studio Professional 6.0 and got all CD's and a couple of help guides, couple of posters for VB and Java + 1 year free MSDN Library subscription (which got extended for another year because of a promo that was running at that time). I'm thinking that OEM would just come with CD's.

3) Doesn't really matter, but if you can get the 5 license version cheaper i would suggest that. Much less hassle of having to keep multiple CD's of the same program.

Thanx I think we're gonna go ahead and get a 5 license Studio edition. Now time to brush up on my Windows skillz.
