Vista's idle detection is dodgy

I'm using vista 32bit, and my powersave mode often won't activate.

I know this sometimes happens when you have a media player open, but I don't even have one open, and I get this.

Any ideas how to fix it?
It wastes a lot of power when it doesn't put my two 20" monitors on standby during idle.

not sure if this is related, but when i run FAH on vista, in lowest priority mode, it always runs the cpu at full. it doesnt care what im doing, so i have to pause it during the day and just let it run at night.

Of course it runs the cpu at full, it's suppsoed to. A higher priority thread will take time from it (the other apps will have priority) but overall the cpu will be kept pegged.

Did you turn on media sharing or activate away mode? Go into power properties and select your power plan, and walk thru it. If media sharing is on, the system won't sleep since it has to be active to stream...

Ah I think this is it. It was on allow the computer to enter away mode.
I think I need to turn it to allow computer to sleep right?

what if you don't want the computer to sleep? I still want my computer to function, for instance, if I'm downloading a file. If it were to go into sleep mode, then my downloads/HD is gonna shut down

but when something is higher-priority and is run, windows doesnt back off FAH at all. the whole system is very laggy, and thats just one core being used on a opty165. i didnt run FAH in XP so i dont know if its different or not. from what i hear though, most people leave it running and dont know it is, the system just runs it when 'idle'

i gave up years ago relying on my systems to put my monitors into sleep. i set my power settings to turn off harddisks after an hour, and monitor after 3 hours (in case you forget and/or your watching a movie so it wont cut out during), and thats it. when i leave my desk i hit the power button on the screen, simple as that. you will get used to it after awhile, its not a big deal at all and i am a lazy person. plus you save that additional 5 or so watts that sleep mode consumes constantly.

Windows try's to detect if the system is in use (it's not just based on kb/mouse activity). Further, windows has api's that applications are supposed to call to tell it 'hey, I'm busy so don't turn off' An example is a dvd player should be telling windows 'dont idle screen' while the movie is playing. Now not all apps do this, but its a bug (IMHO) in them if they dont.

Aww, ok, sounds like the idle detection isn't working properly in Vista. Do yo get the same issue if you run it as admin?

You might want to grab a watt meter and check that, many monitors draw the same when the power swtich is off or sleeping (since the circruits are still there to respond to remotes, do instant on, etc). An exception (for example) is the dell's where the power switch turns off the onboard usbhub.
