Doesn't look like there were any similar threads, so I'll give this a shot:

I was running Vista 32 bit and having the same issues...

Playing source games in Vista gives me crashes galor - sometimes it is that the program cannot allocate memory...sometimes C++ runtime errors. I originally assumed this was a large address aware problem so I bumped up to Vista64, and tagged the Source hl2.exe files to be largeaddressaware using editbin:

editbin.exe /LARGEADDRESSAWARE filename.exe

Now, with that set...I still crash, same exact ways - usually on map change, but I also crash during a game. I've turned off the user control crap, so I think that means all my programs run with admin rights, no? Anyway, I've also tried compatibility mode with no luck. So I went ahead in task manager and looked at the "Peak Working Set (Memory)" variable, and found the game usually crashes when I hit around 875 MB of usage...which seems off. If this is the program running out of address space (but with largeaddressaware on? Doesn't seem right.)

Here's some info from the windows event logger:

Faulting application hl2.exe, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x4445c334, faulting module materialsystem.dll, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x466703dc, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0000a3a6, process id 0xb2c, application start time 0x01c7d715fbbe6700.

Computer specs:

eVGA 8800 GTX 640 MB - 162.22 drivers
eVGA 680i SLI A1 - 15.01 drivers
Creative X-Fi platinum - 2.15.2 drivers
Crucial 2 GB DDR2 RAM - 4-4-4-12
Intel Q6600, not OC'ed (yet)

I'm at a loss, I've tried everything...only change I can think of now that would help is adding another 2 GB (I have another 2 GB arriving monday for a total of 4 GB)

ANY help is appreciated....anything at this point short of "Use XP"

HL2: DM & CS:S run just fine for me on Vista Ultimate x64 here.

Not sure what your problems are stemming from, sorry.

BTW UAC isn't crap, & turning it off does not cause applications to run in admin mode.

Right clicking & selecting "Run as Administrator" does, or adding that permanently in the .exe or shortcut's properties works, but that's not necessary anyway.

But now that UAC is off....I'm not able to select run as admin in the exe's properties...

I don't think UAC is crap, but my Kaspersky install does the same protections, just not as pesky. (No, Kaspersky is not installed yet, and cannot be causing these issues.)

Think this is a driver issue guys? n7, did you do anything with Large address aware...? What settings to you run HL2 apps at...I've seen someone speculate that anything above 4xAA or 4xAS may cause issues.

Thanks!

I just remembered the last time i ran CS:S & HL2: DM was with the older leaked 163.11 betas.

But i know i ran Source back with the 158.24 drivers just fine too.

I have the 162.22 drivers now, but haven't run those games yet, sorry.

I don't run anything special.
Usually 2560x1600 everything maxed 4xAA/16xAF.
