Vista32 vs Win7 install space needed?

I put vista32 ultimate on my apple and after the updates it takes up a TON of room. Is this normal? I never really looked at this on my PC's becuase I have so many other things on them.

What space does win7 take up?
 
Vista takes exactly 1 TON of space.
Windows 7 takes exactly one @ssload of space.
Windows XP takes only a small nugget of space.
Where DOS didn't take any space at all.

I hope this clears things up for you.
