Vista x64 wont start

I woke up this morning, and my computer was no longer working. it was stuck at a boot error, "please insert the boot media and try again". so obviously it had rebooted during the night.

I rebooted several times to try to get it to work, but it was for not. the screen blacks out and doesnt display anything prior to actually loading anything from the windows install. (this works the same way in safe mode, too.)

i pull out my vista x64 DVD to try a recovery install, and tell it to "boot from dvd". it doesn't help. that also blacks out the screen, only this time immediately after the "windows is loading" progress bar passes a few times.

i'm completely at a loss as to what to do. 🙁

First, do a BIOS reset.
If no joy, start changing out components for known working ones. Start with PSU, then memory, then CPU the HDD.

Or else give it to geek squad and bend over.................

I pulled the main HDD out of the machine and stuck it into a thermaltake blacX. it's an external harddrive dock that is accessed via USB.

it wouldnt read. i got it in the freezer atm. i never understood why this trick was recommended, but i dont see how it can hurt at this point.

when it was trying to access the HDD, there was a rythmic low frequency "ticking" of sorts that happened about every second. next time i try it, if it does it again, i might see if i can record it.

i'm typing this on a netbook, which is getting rather annoying. i need to get another USB keyboard. the only usb keyboard i have was stolen by my brother for his computer... :/

at least my netbook can drive my main monitor. i was getting sick of browsing websites at 1024x600.

i dont know if the main HDD is really the problem. what i dont get is why the computer refused to boot a recovery DVD. (technically it's the vista installation DVD...)

so yeah, even if i wanted to reformat the drive, it wouldnt allow me to.

EDIT:

Freezer Trick was no go.

EDIT2:

I realized i have a spare 160 gig HDD i'm not using for anything right now.

assuming i send the raptor in for replacement from WD, and i install vista x64 on the spare hdd like it was my main hdd, how hard would it be to just transfer the contents to the raptor when i get my replacement?

the blacX i have has eSATA, so it could potentially be bootable. (i think....>.>)
