Vista x64 - Windows Explorer running slooooooooow

Opening Windows Explorer and navigating to a particular folder and file is painfully slow. It takes at least 2 minutes. I'm going nuts watching the progress bar sloooooowly moving across the top of the window. Why does Explorer even need a progress bar??? Even opening the control panel can take over a minute. Other than this anomaly with Explorer, the computer runs normally.

There are no mapped network drives and no USB or other portable storage devices hooked up

AMD Athlon 64 x2 5200
Gigabyte M57SLI-S4 MB
4 gig DDR2 800
Gigabyte NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS
1 Seagate 500 gig SATA HD
Samsung DVD RW Drive (empty)
Windows Vista x64 Build 6001 (SP1)

TIA

 This is in no way normal. Do you have any explorer shell extensions loaded. What other sw do you have installed that might be adding command handlers/extensions to shell objects?

Nope, as far as I know there are no extensions. I've got Office 2007, Acrobat Reader 8, Firefox and Yahoo Messenger and that's about it. This is a brand new install, less thank a week old.

This might be a clue
