I had this problem for about 10 months now, and I finally got fed up with it. Specs are in my sig. Everytime I either try to restart or shutdown, computer ends all programs and I am left with the desktop, and nothing happens. Can anyone tell me what's wrong ? Thanks.

neone ? I think the problem started when I installed drivers for my Logitech G15, but I uninstalled them and nothing happened, So I am not sure.

I have the same problem, and no solution. Looking over the internet you'll find a wealth of people all looking to get this fixed. Some blame Vista x64, some blame motherboard bios, some blame new Nvidia drivers, some blame USB ports. It seems a problem pretty exclusive to Vista x64. For me, it started just recently. I've had vista since July, so it's something that's happened recently to screw this up on me. I've run in to a good amount of driver problems when dealing with x64, and it makes me seriously regret my purchase of it, over x86.

I have Vista x64 Ulti on the rig in the sig and have no problems with shutting down. Do you have all of the various windows updates and latest non-beta drivers?

Yes. However, it is most likely one of the more recent updates or driver that's caused the problem, as I had no problems until recently. The number of causes that people discussing for this are phenomenal, some cited one of the more recent KB updates as well.

I also have no problems with Vista x64(Home Premium version) so don't be so quick to blame the OS,could be a driver causing the problem.

Btw my current USB devices ,all working fine.

USB 4GB Readyboost PeakHardware Drive.
USB Keyboard
USB Razer DiamondBack mouse
USB MP4 player(4GB).
USB 256mb thumb drive
USB Leadtek DTV Tuner
USB Flash card reader(XD and SD)

Driver wise all working great,I would double check all your drivers including chipset drivers are the latest.

Also run CCleaner won't do any harm.

Btw I had a similar problem on XP years ago, think I reinstalled chipset drivers to fix the problem.

Sometimes it takes my Vista Biz x64 a while to shut down after I uninstall something that requires a reboot (like nvidia graphic drivers for example), but other than that I don't have any problems. I'm sure if you actually took the time to find the root of the problem it wouldn't be that difficult to solve.
First thing I would do based on your hardware is remove the X-fi. Add/remove devices until you figure out which one it is, then complain to the manufacturer.

Also, do this all at stock settings, no overclocking.

I never blamed the OS. All I did was list the things other have found to be the cause of their problem, or blame it on. Anything from the OS, drivers, bios, USB devices, Symantec Antivirus, recent KB update, and so on, someone has claimed to be the problem. No definitive solution for it though. However the only thing that remained consistent across the board was that it was Vista x64, which doesn't mean I'm blaming the OS. Could be anything.
