Vista x64 SP1 on a 16GB SSD

Make sure there is enough free space on your computer's hard disk to install the service pack. The 32-bit SP1 requires a minimum of 7 gigabytes (GB) of free space; the 64-bit SP1 requires a minimum of 13 GB of free space.

The space usage of the Windows folder is 6GB. How on earth can the requirement stated for HDD space be more than twice that?

I had no problem running Vista on a 16GB SSD despite what people say. Although I cheated a bit by relocating the common files and temp files folder. I have 1.5GB left in my SSD drive for a long time. But now Microsoft has screwed me up. How am I going to update to SP1?

I am thinking of taking an image of my SSD and put it on a HDD then see if I can reverse the process after SP1 is installed.

By default vista pretty much "forces" several gigabytes worth of pagefile.sys and
hiberfile.sys storage for VM paging and hibernation onto C: drive.

I don't recall a way *at installation time* to get it to not do that 'by default', though
you can certainly change the location / size of the paging file once it is installed.
Unfortunately AFAIK the only thing you can do about hiberfile.sys is to disable hibernation
to get rid of the file (which alone is a bit bigger than your total physical RAM in all cases).

I would never install directly to SSD; it is probably much better to install to HDD, configure things like page files / hibernation / location of TEMP & TMP & Temporary Internet Files,
location of the USER PROFILE / ROAMING PROFILE folders, etc.
THEN use an imaging program to transfer the image to SSD.

Actually if I was going through all that work I'd consider using the AIK to make a custom *installable* image of VISTA x64 including SP1, all your locally optimized settings / drivers / applications / configurations, etc. then use that as your master install image.
