Hey all,

My computer just started freezing right at the initial Microsoft Windows splash screen where the little knight rider scrolling bar appears.

As soon as the bars appear, the computer hard locks.

I have not made any hardware changes for some time... nor software for that matter.

Safe Mode WILL get me into Windows just fine.

I tried removing all overclocks, and even reset my CMOS, just in case... but same result.

Is there a boot log that will help identify what is getting stuck?

I have read this early in the boot points toward memory... RAM settings have not changed in many months. I am testing the sticks just in case right now.

Thanks for any suggestions, I am running out of ideas.

I was referring to the horizontal scroll bar directly on top of the Microsoft Corporation logo.

I guess the Knight Rider reference was a bit vague :)

I am trying to figure out what is locking the system at that very initial point of Windows boot.

Safe Mode boots just fine... albiet allowing 5 minutes for diskcrc check.

Thanks again,

Sam

Try normal startup with individual listing of drivers and modules (something like that should be an option from the safe mode menu) -- then note the one that freezes. Then do a boot with individual module confirmation... don't confirm the one that locks.

There is something in the boot process thats locking the system.
1. Did you install any new hardware/software that might be causing the problem.
2. In safemode try some startup boot managers like msconfig or Autoruns to minimize the startup software and look for bad entries.
3. You could try System Restore to rollback system to prior to the problems.

Safe mode just doesn't install drivers, so it's likely a driver issue.
I'd start by reinstalling the video drivers (using DriverCleaner) and work my way up from there.

If things are working correctly, loading crcdisk.sys shouldn't take more than a few seconds. The fact that it takes 5 minutes under safe mode means something is wrong. However crcdisk.sys problems are just about the ultimate generic issue, it could be damn near anything. I'd start with disabling any extra drive controllers you may have (particularly anything JMicron) and see what you get.
