Vista won't boot when adding IDE HDD to SATA RAID0 system

Hi all,

For a few years I've been running Windows Vista on the below configuration (complete dxdiag can be posted if you require). In short: Vista installed on an NVIDIA RAID0 array of two 74Gb Raptors. Because they're nearly full, I bought a cheapo WD Caviar 500Gb E-IDE drive for downloads, iTunes etcetera. The SATA stripe is on it's own obviously, the 1st IDE cable contains both optical drives, and I've connected the the new IDE HDD on the 2nd IDE cable, on it's own.

When I start up the PC and go into the BIOS, the IDE HDD is recognised perfectly, as are the Raptors. I've put the RAID array as 1st boot device, but whatever I do, after the RAID controller message, I get a black screen and no HDD activity. If I turn off the PC, unplug the power from the IDE drive and start up the PC, Vista boots as normal.

I've had the jumper on the IDE drive in all possible positions (settings), but the result is always the same. The stupid thing is: apparently Windows does begin booting, because after turning the PC off and on (to change jumper settings), Windows recognises that it didn't finish loading the last time and asks me what to do. Logically speaking, it can only do that if booting from the RAID0 array because the new drive isn't even formatted yet, so why in the name of all that's holy doesn't it finish booting?

I've also tried using Vista setup, but that shows only the IDE drive and NOT the RAID0 array. Again, disconnecting the IDE drive will make Vista setup show the RAID0 array again.

I'm at a loss at this point. I must be missing something simple, can anyone please help me out?
