Vista with SP1
Since about 1 week ago, WU downloaded some updates and I opted to install them, with the 'shutdown and install' option on the Start Menu.
The problem is that the install never finishes. I have to power off the computer while it's doing it's "Do not unplug or power off" business. I've left it 12 hours, and it was still there thrashing the hard drive to death, and progress ticker ticking along, but it never finished.
The problem is that even though nothing is showing in Windows Update control panel, I still get prompted to 'shutdown and install'. And if I do so, I get the never ending 'do not unplug...'
There's nothing the strikes me as obvious in the event logs, and absolutely nothing in the windows update log. No errors - nothing.
How do I find out what update is failing to install? And how do I stop it trying to install every time I shutdown (unless I manually select shutdown but don't install). And anyway, that's not going to help when the next major update gets pushed out, as that will eventually need a shutdown to complete installation - and I'm guessing the system will never get far enough to install it.
