My luck with Vista since its release has been relatively good. I've had few, if any, real problems with it, and overall I enjoy it.
Still, there's been one nagging issue since the beginning that I'd like to start investigating again, and I'm hoping someone here might have some ideas.
I have an Epson Stylus CX4800 all-in-one with card slots (which act as a card reader for the computer). After installing it in Vista I began to experience a very unusual problem that I was lucky to manage to troubleshoot enough to get my computer operating again.
If my printer is turned off, Vista simply will not boot. After the initial loading bar of Windows, when it goes to black before heading to the actual log-in screen, it never comes up. The hard drive makes some noise for a short period of time, then quiets down, and the computer just sits idle, making absolutely no progress.
I've also noticed that certain installers or applications fail to run properly when it's turned off. ATI's Catalyst installer hangs while searching for hardware and sits there until I turn the printer on, at which point it continues. Other installers exhibit similar behavior. In Acronis TrueImage, when I open it or try to restore a backup, it first scans all of my drives--during this time period it will hang at some point until I turn the printer on, and then continue.
So any theories what could be causing this and what I could do to solve the issue? And replacing the printer isn't much of an option both because I don't want to replace the printer, and if I remove the printer my computer won't boot.
I'm thinking the issue is related in some way to the card readers on the computer, since Acronis seizes up while scanning drives, but I don't think ATI's installer is doing the same thing, so I'm not sure what its story is.
Anything you can suggest would be greatly appreciated. I want to get this problem solved before I reformat and end up making the same mistake again, and before I either DO wish to replace my printer or before it fails, rendering my computer unbootable. As well, if there's a power outage my printer doesn't turn back on automatically. I just bought a UPS which should fix the problem since it will send my computer into hibernate, and my computer boots from hibernate just fine with the printer off, but there could still be unforeseen problems that I'd like to avoid.
Thanks for anything you can think of.
