Vista "visuals lag" Beta 2 Build 5384

Anything I do in Vista has a 10-15 delay. Minimizing a window, clicking start, moving the text cursor, typing text, clicking menus, opening programs, etc. - EVERYTHING except moving the mouse pointer has a 10-15 second delay from the time I make the input via mouse or keyboard. It's not a processor issue because my processor rarely goes above 10%.

What's strange is that when I process a command, such as running defrag, the hard drive responds immediately (I can tell because it makes noise), but the visuals on the screen don't catch up until 10-15 seconds later and only update once every 10-15 seconds after that.

I have the latest Vista drivers for my video card installed.

Any ideas?

See the link in my signature for hardware information.

Yeah, Beta 2 was a bit of a dog.
Its probably not your computers fault at all.
I can say though that Vista Build 5472.5 is far faster and is a great step forward for microsoft.
If you have registered your beta 2 - Good news - RC1 is due within 14 days (give or take a day) and its going roXXor your b0xx0r! 😀

I had similar problems except not as extreme as yours. I noticed however just the other day I went to reload my actual motherboard chipset drivers, and performance increased dramatically. Still not quick enough, but definitely better than before. The latest Vista drivers for a couple of my devices didn't work though, which was a disappointment. My Audigy ZS 2 doesn't work, and although my graphics card is working, the chipset information, etc. doesn't come up no matter what drivers I try. This is a Sapphire Radeon 9600xt 256mb.

Let us know your results.

Stopping the Windows Search service did not help.

When I boot into safe mode, there's no lag whatsoever. There's also no lag when I boot into safe mode with networking so I think it's safe to say it's not a networking issue.

Next I will reload my chipset drivers with the latest release and report back with results.

I don't know what Aero is; how do I turn it off?

ATI X800XL 256MB 256-bit PCI-e Radeon (latest Vista drivers downloaded from ATI's site and installed yesterday)

right-click on the desktop and select personalize
select windows color and appearance
select "open classic appearance properties for more color options"
select "windows vista basic"

I reinstalled the latest chipset drivers; that did not help.

Will try disabling Aero now. Will post back with results.

I don't have the 'Windows Color and Appearance' option in the 'Personalize' window. I do, however, have a 'Visual Appearance' option that has a 'Color Scheme' select box in its window. "Windows Vista Basic" is already selected in that box. Lag hasn't improved at all since the beginning of this thread.

Any other ideas?

So it's definitely a display [driver] issue. Here's how I know:

1) Boot into Vista safe mode.
2) Uninstall display drivers.
3) Reinstall latest ATI display drivers.
4) Reboot into Vista normal mode.
5) Everything works fine; no lag.
6) Vista "finishes installing display drivers" and asks for reboot.
7) Reboot into Vista normal mode; LAG IS BACK!

Suggestions are very welcome!
