I have an HP machine that is going to require a new install of Vista. The only Vista disk I have is for Vista Ultimate. Is it possible (like other Windows versions) to use the Ultimate CDROM to install Home Premium using the HP CD key on the computer case?

Thanks

If your Vista Ultimate is a retail disk it won't activate with an OEM COA/Key.

It's an NFR disk I got from Intel when I got their system builder package years ago. Never used the disk, don't like Vista. I think you're correct here and that's been my suspecion. The CDKEY is entered pretty late into the install process so it would seem that the "Ultimate" install would be pretty well completed when I get to that point.

A system builder license is OEM. Since you've got the HP key, and if you can still boot into Windows on that machine, why don't you try an in-place upgrade. I believe you have the option to enter the product key before the installation begins.

I can't get into Windows and I didn't really want to give away my Vista Ultimate to a customer.

The problem I'm faced with is the user forgot their password (old lady) or the profile is corrupted. I've tried all the PW's she thought it was and even the "NT Offline Password" editor, it said it removed the PW, but it doesn't. Interesting program, played with it for awhile, too bad it won't work.

Also tried activating the Admin account, which I did, but you have to disable all active user accounts on the machine before administator shows up on the login screen. When I attempt to deactive the user, it says "user not found". Funny, I can browse in the cmd window to the users directory and it's definately there. I also tried a couple system restore points, no dice. This is a FRUSTRATING problem!

Just a quick note: Vista Ultimate will install as the version (Home Premium) your key matches.
