i'm sure there has been threads on this before, but it seems like the search engine doesn't like me since it doesn't show me any relevant threads.

so, i want windows vista for my new pc, but there is a piece of hardware that does not have vista-compatible driver (says so on manufacturer website). no idea when it will be available.

basically, i want to use xp now and upgrade free (or almost free) to vista later. there are some user reviews on a few popular vendors that discouraged me to go with this upgrade coupon path. supposedly, it takes forever or is troublesome to receive a copy of vista if you buy xp mce oem or xp pro oem.

if you have any experience using the upgrade program with those two versions, please describe how it went and suggest whether i should go for it.

thanks

why dont you tell us what piece of hardware it is?

The upgrade coupon is slow, very slow. The company that runs the upgrade coupon program said they will just now start shipping out the upgrades, after a month of vista being released. I got an email last night telling me its gonna be 4 to 6 weeks. But since they already started it might be quicker for you.

its a very old alcatel speedtouch usb modem that i'm using for sbc/at&t. i'll only use the service for a few more months, so i don't want to buy a new modem.

Do yourself a favor, and DON'T go the upgrade route. It just isn't worth all the MAJOR BS. Either wait, and buy OEM Vista ,or ditch the modem now, and buy something cheap that will get you thru. Visit Hardforum, and check out the 14+page thread about this "FREE" upgrade. I've been in it since the start, and believe me, if I knew that OEM was only $119 for HP, I would have just gone that route. I'm STILL waiting as they "lost my first subbmission , and it took about 50+trys to even get the online form filled in for the confirmation number, and that's a TRUE accounting of just how many times I had to try,say nothing of all the E-mails to Moduslink. I also have a MAJOR thread over at PCPER called "Has the egg gone bad? "

Now I'm worried that I should email them, but things are looking crappy from a lot of posters. I'm COA verified but I mailed my coupon/forms in about three weeks ago so no PoP yet .... I finally have MCE2005 working properly so Vista was just a bonus, but it is at least worth pursuing.

Just go to the upgrade website, and send an E-mail to ask about status. they will send a reply, and go from there. It REALLY is worth the BS, if you don't mind jumping thru all the hoops, but OEM is the way to go now. They will probably ask you to resend the pop. Make sure you always use the reply button when responding so ukeep the tracking number in your E-mails. It seems to make responses come a lot faster. Last e-mail I sent ,was answered in less than 24 hours.

Thx bigdaddy, I've followed your posts here and on {H} in that monster thread so I was assuming I'd run into problems eventually. I wanted to email earlier but since I'm at work it was not worth the effort. Once I get home I'll inquire and see where I am at in the process.

I went over to PCPer.com and couldn't fine your newegg thread, bigdaddy. And their search is unavailable unless you register. Can you perhaps link me to that thread?

Woot !! Got an email this morning that my Pop was verified so it looks *cough* like I am OK at this point. Still, 4-6 weeks of waiting - no big deal here on that, but at least I got that good news.

I used the upgrade route through Newegg buying Media Center Edition of XP. They are right, the process is SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW.... Not only slow, but they are morons over there. Took many phone calls for me to get them to accept it (they first claimed to only deal with venders i.e.- dell, compaq). Took a while before they realized that my Newegg was legit to do with them. After they accepted it it took me about another 3 weeks before I got it about 2-3 weeks ago. And get this. Middle of last week I finally got an email saying it was shipping that day... um, I already got it morons. Hopefully they make a mistake and send another :D

Update: Got my Vista Home Premium DVD from Moduslink yesterday. Wife had already opened it and wanted to know how much I paid for it. So I told her "$12.76, my dear" .. WooHAA !!! The long journey is finally over.
