System specs
Q9300
Intel DP45SG
PNY 8800GT 512
2x2GB G.Skill DDR3 10666
Samsung HD403LJ SATA HDD
Phillips SPD2513P SATA DVD-RW
Symptoms:
Fresh install of windows vista ultimate x64
Installs w/o any problems, install mobo drivers followed by windows updates.
During updates and at random intervals after updating windows freezes up... and by freezing i mean everything locks up. the mouse cursor freezes, everything on screen freezes (animations etc..) keyboard does nothing, power button on the case does nothing. the only thing to do is to hold down the power button to shut down.
It happens anywhere from a minute after loading into windows to 5-10 min, but it always happens. I can be attempting to install programs, or just let it sit doing nothing and i come back and it's frozen.
Things i have tried:
apply SP1 first thing after fresh install... still happens. After this i did mobo drivers and followed by downloading all updates.
The last thing i did was a system restore to roll back the last updates i downloaded hoping that was the issue (one [Edit... 2.. rolling back further] freeze up since the last fresh install and it was after the last update) So far no freezes since i did the system restore but it's only been on 20 min or so.
I've also ran
chkdsk /r
memtest
bios update
(Edit: also, i've searched for firmware for the dvd drive and it appears that i've already got the most recent?)
AND, to make things more interesting, the live UBCD i can run and do anything i want for as long as i want w/o any freezing. Also, i installed Windows XP pro and it runs w/o any issues as well for as long as i want... games, whatever... no issues..
so my conclusion is that it's some sort of software issue
i have Vista home premium and still used xp pro because of game compatibility issues and just got vista ultimate so i thought i'd give it a go because i didn't play the problem game anymore, and in order to take advantage of 4+ GB of RAM... ><; Sadly it's not working out as i'd hoped despite finding a ton of positive posts about vista during my troubleshooting research...
Help! thanks ><!
edit: I'm beginning to suspect the latest nvidia drivers... i rolled back past a set of windows updates, and nvidia drivers and so far it's been up w/o any freezing while i've transferred about 60GB from the drive to an external
