Vista Ultimate upgrade to windows 7?

Hi. can I upgrade my Vista Ultimate 64 to Windows 7 Professional using the upgrade dvd for $99? I am a little confused on if and how it will work. Thank you. 🙂

I'm pretty sure (not 100%) that I read you have to get Win7 Ultimate if you want to do an in place upgrade of Vista Ultimate. So then you have to ask yourself if the trouble of having to reinstall the OS is worth the extra 20$ (or 120$ if you decide to preorder the upgrade version).

You CANNOT downgrade editions. Your only option would be the double install trick if Microsoft hasn't removed it.

I've been looking into this myself and it's not at all clear what will happen to consumers who have Ultimate licenses. The retail price of Windows 7 Ultimate is only $30 more than Windows 7 Professional but, since there is no presale discount, Ultimate users would have to pay $120 more to upgrade...and most don't really need/want the two Ultimate exclusive features.

From what I can tell, if you haven't BitLockered your disk, you should be able to do a "clean" install of Windows Professional on a system that has Vista Ultimate installed. It will involve backing up everything up but it should work.

It's all idle speculation at this point. I gather that Microsoft is aware of the confusion but hasn't put anything together that addresses this specific scenario.

Remember, there is no requirement to actually follow through on a pre-order. You can cancel any time between now and October if your understanding changes ...actually, you can refuse delivery at the door and get your money back.

The W7 Professional upgrade package will allow you to "upgrade" from Vista Ultimate to W7 Professional, but only via a "Clean Install" (Microsoft definition). That means you'll have to re-install all your applications and data.

indeed... it does appear to be everyones opinion.

I dont think it matters what version to what version you go to.

But CNET guy seems to think you can go from any version to any version via clean install. http://news.cnet.com/8301-1386...?tag=mncol;mlt_related

I would have to agree as its the only logical way to do it.

They have a free upgrade coupon included as a combo but then when you look at the combo, its a free Windows 7 release candidate which is already free. This seems very deceptive on Newegg's part. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding. Can someone clear this up for me?
This is OEM Vista Home Premium with a coupon for an upgrade to W7 Home Premium when it's released. As an OEM version, it'll only install on an empty partition. And the license prohibits moving it to a different PC later. No telling what the "upgrade" version will be. Presumably, it's another OEM disk, which means a fresh install again.

Obviously I read it wrong then, only saw the combo deal which I presume is separate from the upgrade coupon
