i am thinking about buying either the ultimate oem version or the ultimate upgrade version. for the upgrade version am i allowed to just make images of xp and put it on a dvd. and whenvever i want to reinstall, i will just put the image back and reinstall vista.

Yeah, you can image XP and then install Vista. Blackangst1 is right though, you're probably better off just imaging the Vista install once it's installed and use that if you need too. If you need to re-install, it will save you a lot of time.

Norton Ghost?

I say that as more of a question than an answer. I've never used it but heard it thrown around for situations like this.

with acronic true image or norton ghost, say if my hard disk was crash, and I have to get a new one. I can just pop in my backup disk and restore the system without having to reinstall windows? or is there more to it? Is there a bootable disk I would have to create for true image or nortom ghost to activate the restore process?

yes....creating a rescue disk is one of the first things you should do...

www.acronis.com

version 10 supports vista and a great deal more..

it can be used as bare metal restore

for the upgrade version, you can no longer do a clean install with Vista. you have to have an existing installation of Windows XP in order to upgrade. so an image of Vista would be ideal.

you can do a clean install from within windows xp, that what happen when I used my vista premium upgrade version on my windows xp64. I found out it put all of the old windows files ina folder called windows old or somethen like that. it included like my programs files folder, everything that delt with xp64 went into that folder.
