Vista Ultimate Issue !!!

Member
I have just installed Vista Ultimate on my machine...

I have 80 Gb Sata ... with 4 partitions of 20gb each...

I have installed Vista on C partition (20 gb),,, but my D partition (20 gb extended) has disappeared...

My Computer now shows 3 partitions of 20 gb each.....

1) How can I get the partition back.. (data is not important as I have backup)

2) How can I add this capacity (20gb) to C partition making it 40 Gb....

any help will be highly appreciated..

Thanxxx

sounds almost like a partition got switched from extended to primary. hmm

If you have backups and just need the partitions back, use disk management to create, delete, and expand the existing ones.

Any suggestions about what software to use....

I would want any software that will not screw up my rest of the disk as C (20 gb) has Vista... D and E (20 Gb each) have all my data...

Please suggest

thanxxx

and unlike XP, vista lets you modify the size of active partitions without needing something like partition magic. i was fartin around with it after i first installed. i got bored and just put everything back to C

but I have Vista Ultimate !!!

please suggest

Addendum:

I tried COmputer Management ...
Tried to Format 18.64 Gb space ....

but get message:" There is not enough space available on disk(s) to complete this operation"

Please suggest...

lol at this point, you just need to re-read the above posts, find disk management, and do what you need 😉

I have read the above post ...

I have tried and get ERROR ....

It defines that area as 18.64 GB
Free Space

I tried Computer Management ...

Tried to Format 18.64 Gb space ....

but get message:" There is not enough space available on disk(s) to complete this operation"

Please...

You can't just format free space. Create a partition in it first. Then format the partition.

Do this:
Start | Run | type diskmgmt.msc, hit enter.
Hit F1

I'll paste the stuff you're interested in:

To create a simple volume using the Windows interface

In Disk Management, right-click the unallocated space on the dynamic disk on which you want to create the simple volume, and then click New Simple Volume.

In the New Volume Wizard, click Next, click Simple, and then follow the instructions on your screen.

To extend a basic volume using the Windows interface

In Disk Manager, right-click the basic volume you want to extend.

Click Extend Volume?.

Follow the instructions on your screen.

Thanks for all the help...

just makin clickable back in a few..

I think jkresh has it correct ... the new section you want to create will need some overhead space
I would try it at 19000 or perhaps a touch lower .. since 19085 did not work, look at the properties
of the partiition, determine the Cluster Size .... then divide that into the Shown Size ... that should
give you a size that Can Create

Thanxxx...

As that is the home computer I will try in 3-4 hrs and get back to you ...
if the problem is solved or no....

Thanxxx for all the help.

Hi !!

Tried that too.... (reducing the size to 18500-18000).....

but still the same Error message " There is not enough....."

Please help me as I am unable to install any softwares (free space in C drive is 3 Gb only)...

can only use the system for Internet....

any suggestions will be highly appreciated...

thanxxx

Yes, it's jacked. You're not doing anything wrong.

The free space and last two drives are all part of the same partition. Given that this isn't working I would suspect something is up with one of the extended boot records in that partition. It's also likely that the free space is not physically located where the diagram shows it (if the first EBR were screwed up you wouldn't see the rest of the drives in the partition).

Someone is going to need to go in with diskprobe and check your partition table, EBRs and boot sectors to be sure all the locations and sizes are correct. Unfortunately this is beyond what can be done during a back-and-forth in a forum.

You should have X days of free tech support from Microsoft or X number of free incidents that came with your Vista ultimate. Now would be the time to use them. Call MS, when the call router is getting you to the correct team just let them know you want to talk to the "Setup" team. Those are the guys that handle disk issues like this. I've seen far worse when I was on that team so they should be able to handle it just fine. EBRs are a bit of a hassle to work with and fix (they're akin to a linked list) but it's just a hassle, not impossible. They can use an Easy Assist session to diskprobe or perhaps walk you through it over the phone.

One possibility that isn't completely without risk is to convert the disk to dynamic. The conversion process will read the partition table, EBRs and boot sectors when it builds the LDM database at the end of the drive. Once the conversion is complete the problem may get left behind. If I had good backups (and no diskprobe kung fu 😛 ) I would give this a shot.

If you have free tech support though, go that route. They'll fix it I'm quite sure. If you don't mind, PM me the case number. I'd be interested to see the notes on what exactly they find.

Thanxx

getting help from Microsoft is like putting your head in a blendor and turning the knob to MAX...

I will go ahead with converting the disk to Dynamic.... but before that I would like info ...

1) if my rest of the data on other partitions is at RISK 'cause I dont have backup of that data and that is important and actually lots of it ... more that 12 GB..

what do you suggest...

A separate hard disk on which to back that data up, or some DVDs to burn it to. You might not like that answer, but I'd be doing you no favours suggesting anything else if your data is that important.

Because when you're messing with partitions, it's not uncommon for the entire partition table to become hosed.

it means I am quite stuck ......

will try different things and let you know if anything was possible or no.....

I suggest what I suggested.

Call Microsoft. There are guys there (like me) that can hexedit your disk by hand and correct this issue.

If the data on your current partitions is intact then your MFTs are intact. Busted MFTs can fall into the humpty-dumpty scenario. Busted partition tables, boot sectors and ebrs never fall into the humpty-dumpty. They can always be fixed. If you goof around and blindly try things you can go from the undesirable but fixable scenario that you are in to an unfixable scenario real fast.

If you want to wing it on your own (not my primary recommendation) then get good backups and convert the disk to dynamic. If for any reason it doesn't work, stop where you are and call Microsoft. Worst case in a failed dynamic conversion is again partition table, boot sector, and ebr trouble...it could be worse than where you are now but again it will be fixable (no MFT damage).

Thanxxx to ALL....

I found the Solution and it was by an innane suggestion by my GF (she does not know a thing abt computers let me add that) who suggested me to go back to my Windows XP if I were having problem with Vista....

Taking her "advise" I booted with my XP cd and reached the Partition menu.. and found 18.6 Gb as Unpartioned space.. I created the Partition and Exited....

Vista booted and declared to have found A Partition and Now I have my 80 GB HDD Complete...

Thanxxx again to all
