Vista, top apps to install

I kinda expected to see some kind of sticky on this.

Myself, still a dual boot of XP and Ubuntu.

My Mother-in-Law just got a dell laptop that comes with Vista. I know very little when it comes to Vista it would seem.

Last week, a friend asked me to look at his Vista laptop, complaining it had become sluggish. I installed Spybot search and destroy. Sure enough, it found a number of things. When it finished, choose to remove items, told me app had to be run as admin. Did that, and scanned again. Found all the same items, but couldn't remove them all, as they were in memory. So it would run on next reboot.
Upon reboot, it couldn't remove a few of them. I gave up as it was very late by then.

Anyhow, I want to do things right with this fresh install here. As it's Dell, I plan on removing the AntiVirus software on there.

I use for my XP - Antivir (the free version) it used to held in high standards, still ?

Any tips pointers for software to install, so that getting spyware, malware, trojans is at a minimum. She pretty much only plays web games and stuff with it..

AntiVir and Avast are the only two free anti-virus applications worth considering since AVG decided to become bloatware/spyware.

ok thanks, I'll remove the Macafee, or whatever it's called that Dell installs for AntiVir.

Any idea where I went wrong with Spybot on the laptop and Vista Home. I've done this for many people with XP, and it cleans like a charm.

Had to give up on Vista. Once Spybot loaded on bootup, did it's scan, and never completed. Guess I'll just try once again when I'm over at my buddy's again.

The stuff he had wasn't to nasty, MyWebSearch, and a few others I've seen before. Just it's slowing his system down pretty bad.

Oh, and just remembered, something, had his CPU at a pretty steady 98%. Didn't get a chance to find what was doing that.
