Hi, was wondering if i could get some help from the folks here on the issues with my OS.

the original thread is at hardforums.

cliffs:

rig ran fine prior to neglecting for a week by playing gta4.
ran fine when turned on today and loaded to desktop.
NIS gives me some sort of message with fix now.
i THINK it was a UAC window/msg that came up, clicked on it, screen goes blank.
restarted after waiting for a while, gives me error loading os.

update:
borrow a friend's os disc. F8 works now after putting in disc.

so my rig was running fine and dandy for quite some time since i had vista 32bit ultimate installed. its probably been at least 6 months for vista. anyway, so for the past week, i havent had it running because i rented gta4 and was playing pretty heavily on the ps3. i havent had the computer on since. now after i returned it, i power on my system and it loads up to the desktop just fine. i do notice that the Norton Internet Security thing was displaying something about fix now with an exclamation mark in the task bar. didnt think too much of it and just let it do its own thing. last i recall it was doing something with the emails but dont quite remember what. i think it was a UAC thing that just showed up while doing that. when i clicked on it, my monitor simply turned blank but it was still running and detecting a signal. the monitor did NOT go on standby, and the machine was still running. after a bit of bashing on the keyboard i restarted the computer. then it hangs a bit stating "veryfing dmi pool". after a long while, it says "error unable to load OS". i tried restarting and loading the default bios values and checking to make sure the boot sequence was that on my os drive first (on my maxtor sata). i unplugged the 2 ide drives i run as storage and so far i have had no luck. can any of you give me suggestions? thanks.

Hrm...

Looking at that link you provided, I see you don't have any restore points, and that rang a bell! 🙂

Ok, so after many years w/out one, I finally got a virus. I can't remember any of the files associated w/ it or if the virus actually had a name, and was able to remove all of it. But, I'm using vista 32-bit, and it disabled everything in the security center, deleted all my restore points, and stopped a few services from running.

Sound familiar? 😀

Download and burn an ISO of Drive Fitness Test from hitachi. I think the newest version is 4.11 or 4.12. Boot to the disc, run an advanced scan on your OS drive.

If that passes, boot to the vista CD, repair. Open command prompt, run chkdsk /r. Might have to specify chkdsk C: /r.

If Chkdsk doesn't fix things, you may want to look at the BCD. You're gonna have to google a bit on that, best to see screenshots of it rather than me explaining it.
