Vista sp1

Some dumb questions.
I have a HP laptop running Vista Home Premiom. The auto updates is on and runs as it should. So far the auto update has not upgraded Vista to Sp 1.

Should I try to manually update to sp1 or juast let the auto update do it?

Did you ever install a beta version of SP1? You would have to uninstall it first.

Today on Leo LaPorte (KFI640 am radio) VISTA SP1 was discussed. It was noted how people had so much trouble with WINXP SP2 but many fewer have any problem with VISTA SP1. According to Leo, what MS does is, during the auto update, check your installation for any incompatible drivers. If any are found SP1 will not be offered to be installed. Eventually if an updated/compatible driver becomes available then it will be installed. This continues until your installation is assessed as ready for the SP1 update wherein it will then be presented via the auto update. This procedure by MS is credited with resulting in the much less problematic service pack installation experienced by WINXP for SP2.

Thanks for the info. The Vista installed on my laptop is a oem. (installed on the laptop when I bought it)
There are 3 ?optional updates? that I have put off installing. They are for the touch pad and mouse.
I?ll install them and then try to update to sp1.

SP1 hasn't shown up on my Thinkpad yet. I'm in no hurry, because I want to be sure none of the Lenovo crapware has issues with SP1.

No issues at all with Lenovo utilities on my T60. I had SP1 installed manually (RC1) - then went through the uninstall procedure later, and then it upgraded via WU. No problems at all.

There is a small utility that WU installs before you can do the SP1 via WU. It "opens the door." It is a manual installation.

i tried to do this this morning and i could not, i downloaded the file fine and went to install it and the installer errored out telling me that i did not have the right languadge pack installed and that it needed to be english/german or some other few, i have the normal english version of Vista 64 pro....


anyone have any advice

edit: MrBailey beat me to it, what he said---^

SP1 may well have not shown because of a known driver conflict between the drivers you have now and SP1. Sigmatel audio drivers are a common cause of SP1 not appearing, it never appeared on my desktop until i updated the drivers, which was tough to do because sigmatel has been bought over by someone else and it took a while to find a newer driver, i used one for a gateway computer i think.

Look under cause 5, theres a small list of problematic drivers These also happen to be pretty common drivers as well unfortunately.

yea looks like ill have to check the realtek, sigmatel drivers and the creative ones, however the installer for me did not error out on that it errored out on cause 2, being the incorrect language when in fact mine is english

I downloaded the 450meg stand-alone install file and ran it on my wife's laptop. It took a long time to install......but worked.

Her laptop is noticeably faster. It kind of makes me look forward to the copy of Vista Ultimate I'm getting soon from the MS Feedback Program. The real LAG in the OS has made me dread ever switching to it for anything. If they can work out the rest of the core driver issues (sound, video, etc) more people may finally switch to it.

I had the same problem, I could update all my drivers exept the sigmatel one. Their workaround was to just use the stand alone verison.
