I wonder what sort of EULA the "get legal" offers fall under? I'd assume they have similar restrictions as OEM.

Not sure what they hope to accomplish.
Instead of punishing legit users, which I'm sure this will do , they should just be focusing on impoving the OS to something people actually want.
It will probably take all of a week to crack the new 'protection'.

I hope they aren't thinking the low vista sales is due to piracy.

They are improving Vista,it's called Windows Update and fixes etc in SP1 and also future support.I don't really know what new feature you want from Vista since it has quite a lot of new features and virtually everything a user would want.

As to piracy well its a known fact legit users always get the shortend of the stick, look at game protection for games, legit gamers get more problems with their legal copy of a game then pirated versions..

Personally as it stands Vista right now is very solid,up their with my XP and I don't say that lightly in my case(using Vista x64 version too),lot of things Vista gets blamed for is not even caused by Vista.

I didn't say new feature, I said improving the os.
Improving can be in driver compatibility, ease of use,etc , there is always something that can be improved. Much better spending time there, than on improving the bottom line.

The debate as to vista being solid, etc is off topic.

Users with a high tolerance for irritation can put off switching to genuine software indefinitely, but those who relent and buy a real copy of Windows can do so at reduced prices - $119 for Windows Vista Home Premium, half the regular retail price.

Seriously, I'd like a refund for half the retail price I paid for Windows Vista. If I build a new machine I'll just install my original copy, let it fail WGA, and buy a legit 1/2 price copy from now on.

Sievert said Microsoft plans to offer an update for Windows Genuine Advantage that will run the piracy check regularly without the computer user initiating the process.

ORLY!!! How about you validate my copy and lay off the big brother tactics since you have my money!

You do know drivers are down to the manufacturer of the hardware in question and not Vista's fault?..Microsoft has tried to put a large database of drivers but even that can't cover everything, end of the day bitch to the hardware company concerned,XP has had nearly 7 years of driver updates ,improvements while Vista is almost a year old.As to ease of use well thats down to personal usage/ opinion (easy to use for me,second nature).End of the day drivers are improving in both performance and compatibility, updates, fixes are coming etc... just like we had in XP and the cycle will continue again with Vienna down the road.

As to what is on or off topic I did not know you decide that :frown: .

I don't the topic does :)

Not been around here long have you since thread topics /posts can change quick here in AT forums ;) ,anyway in keeping it on topic for you Microsoft has already stated that there will be more service packs when needed for Vista, they may even decide to change how they handle piracy with Vista again due to user or piracy reasons.

They have the right to protect their interests ,however I don't think they'll find a perfect anti-piracy solution for everybody.
