Vista SP1 not showing on windows update?

Not rebooted my Vista box in 42 days. I see everyone else is chatting about SP1, but when I go to windows update I don't see it, even if i click "check for updates".

i already installed SP1RC, so do I need to uninstall that first before WU will show me SP1 proper?

I presume rebooting will be an inevitable part of the SP1 upgrade process, which is a shame as I'm pretty chuffed with my 42day uptime, especially since I use this PC for work/entertainment/games 12+ hours a day!

You need to uninstall RC. During that process your PC will reboot. It may take a few more updates to get to SP1.

You must uninstall RC1. That takes a while along with a few reboots. It leaves you with the registry key that enables the Windows Update process.

I'd forget about uptime. It's not important. It was cool back when Win 9x crashed on its own for no apparent reason every few days but today, you can leave a computer running for 20 years if you wanted. Big whoop.

nerp, yeah I know, but this is the first stable windows OS I've ever had I think. Actually w2k was ok iirc, but i think that still crashed a bit for me, just nowhere near as much as 9 so i thought it was amazing at the time 🙂

will leave SP1 until i have a backup computer i think, just been reading all of the fuckups people are having with it

I must have installed/uninstalled SP1 betas 5 times or more... and eventually SP1 Final.

The only problem(s) I had was when I was forced to use WU - and WU caused problems every time!

Download Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone (KB936330) and everything will go fine... 😉

EDIT

BTW, after you uninstall SP1 beta, wait for about an hour before installing SP1 Final.

Vista will falsely lead you to believe the uninstall process is complete, but it will actually be working in the background for about another 15-30 minutes, doing whatever it does.

Watching your disk activity light will give you a clue when it's done, but it safer to just follow Microsoft's recommendation and wait an hour.

I *think* this is where a lot of ppl goof up... not reading the instructions! 😀
