Vista SP1 bootup woes

I've searched the internet far and wide for a solution, but I am turning to the pros here.

I had an xp SP3 machine and bought the Vista SP1 OEM. My machine has been fully stable without a hiccup...now, not so much.

Booted up with the Vista disc in to install. Before it actually installed anything yet I cancelled out to move around a couple important documents so it wouldn't be erased (was on desktop). Before I could get that far, my computer wouldn't boot up anymore. Kept giving an error of:

Windows failed to boot (paraphrasing) <windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt.

Ok, so I just say forget those files I'll just install Vista anyways. Install went well, rebooted a few times per install and updated. But I get the same freakin error unless I keep the Vista disc in the cd/dvd drive.

I tried to just copy the file from my wife's computer to a disc then put in the system32 directory....but it won't let me copy the file on my wife's computer.

I'm at a loss....any suggestions or help?

TIA

Thanks for the suggestions, however it doesn't work.

When I run the start up repair it says that it did not find any errors in the startup. I also tried taking the disc out to boot up first, therefore the failed boot would definitely happen so Vista wouldn't think the previous boot was successful. No dice.

I'm at a loss. I've searched the internet far and wide and can't find a solution.
