Ok when you right click on the little sound icon at the bottom right and select "playback devices" theres a few options that appear. They differ dependant on what sound card/mobo you have, i have a Xonar U1 external USB sound card. I have it connected to some Z5500 speakers with an optical cable.
My question is why is there two of these things here I thought that maybe the "speaker" is analogue and the digital out is the digital one but they both play music despite me only using an optical cable which can only carry digital signals. My Z5500 control pod reads "Digital" with the little dolby sign in front when the "speaker" is selected, but it reads "Stereo" when the "digital out" is selected.
Whats the difference between the two? I dont get it.
EDIT: New development! When i use the digital out the volume control and mute on the xonar U1 dont work, even the software equivilents (asus xonar software) have no effect on the volume. So digital out makes the sound cards volume redundant, not that it bothers me theres already the windows media player volume and Z5500 control pod volume to contend with but its a notable difference.
