Vista Slow Network Performance/File Copy

Got a new Dell E521 a few months ago and I'm finally getting around to copying all my data from the old machine (XP SP2 - Dell 400SC/P4 2.8/1GB) to the new and I'm getting extremely poor performance copying stuff via a mapped drive.

I've tried this tweak with no success. The NIC is a Broadcom 10/100 4401, I've tried the latest drivers from both Dell and Broadcom with no success. I've tried adjusting it from 100 auto to forcing 100 full and 100 half (for the hell of it) with the same results. I know it's not hard drive limited as I can hook my external drive to either machine and copy the files over with no problem. I just tried to copy about 6GB of data (varying sizes from a few KB to around 100MB, mostly pictures in the 1MB neighborhood) and across the network it was going back and forth from 200 minutes to not reporting an ETA. To the external drive it took about 15 minutes. I've tried it over the network in both direction (vista->xp, xp->vista) with the same results.

Anything else that I should be looking at here? This is very frustrating.

I fixed my problem by making everything Vista.
I tried:
Vista to XP = slow
XP to Vista = slow
Vista to Linux = fast
Linux to Vista = slow
2000 to Vista = slow
Vista to 2000 = slow

Vista to Vista = Fast either way. Except when play music or using Skype.

Kinda obvious what Microsoft has done here isn't it.

Nothing will fix this. No patch, network setting, nothing. You want fast transfer
speeds make everything Vista.

Uhh, the above guy is spreading some hysteria.

There IS a patch for this. And it will supposedly be resolved in the performance and reliability update coming out on Tues.

And yes, I installed the patch on one of my Vista machines and I get as fast or faster network transfers to win2k and XP machines with the Vista machine. Yep.

I hope you not talking about the patches KB938194 & KB938979. They do not fix
the slow network transfer speeds. A one gig file was going to take 10 min. going
from vista to xp. Vista to Vista took 20sec.

There are a lot of posts on the net saying the same thing about those patches, but maybe
your talking about some other patches nobody knows about.

So you guys are saying this is an OS bug? I know Vista has it's issues but I can't believe that performance this slow would make it through testing.

I'm talking about the specific hotfix available through MS support (not a public download link or anything leaked) to address network file/copy performance. I forget the exact KB article but it has been available on that hotfix site that offers all the hotfixes for download. Normally you have to request the specific fix directly from MS. The difference in network transfers on my laptop was night and day.

I gave up trying to find a fix. I had a Linux server then tried XP and 2000.
So now I have everything Vista and I do get really good network transfer speeds except
when music is playing. Then it stays locked at 10mb/s. I hope they do fix it so I can use
Linux for my server.

Hi,

We installed vista on our new machines in the office and it was a complete pain. Most of my colleagues are already gone back to xp. one of the problems everyone is having is slow network. Anything which has something to do with the network is very slow. We have tried the following solution and it helped on most of the machines. may be it will help someone here:

http://www.chapterzero.co.uk/a...w-Network-Issues&id=21

Basically its an issue with the auto-tuning in vista.

Anyways, let me know if i can help you with something else.

Cheers!
