I don't wanna put vista on my current hard drive so i was wondering if it will fit on an old 14.3 gig I know it's supposed to have 15gig but those of you who installed it already (64-bit) how much space did it actually take up after installation?

I don't think the issue is what YOU want to install it on, I think it's what it want's to have available for it to load to.

As I put the 32-Bit x86 on a 40GB partition, & it looked to make sure that 20gb was available before it sould allow a selection.

It completely ignored a pair of 4GB and 15GB partitions that I use for editing programs,
leaving my choices only those which met or exceeded 20GB.

UPDATE - after finishing my Vista x86 installation on a 41GB partition, WITH NOTHING ELSE
it reports that it occupies 11GB (Approx.) leaving 29.3GB free.

Here are my folder sizes (includes a few installed drivers and programs but nothing big)
Program Files (x86) 337MB
Program Files 489MB
Windows 11.4GB+

Total ~ 12500MB = 12.2GB.

I have 2 GB of RAM. My default pagefile was 2GB I think, and by default hibernation was also on, which results in a 2GB file you may not need.

Anyway, for testing, if you can install Vista on the drive (i.e. the installer says you have enough space), you'll be fine.

Edit: The installer requires either ~14.3GB (~14100MB), or 14300MB which is a little more.
The above poster is probably right though, 15GB (using powers of ten) comes out to 13.96GB (powers of two) which is probably not enough space to even install, unless you have some way of getting around that.

The 15GB limit is for the upgrade option, which have to move around a lot of Win XP files in the process of installing. I was able to just barely install my copy of 32-bit Vista on a 10GB partition. Once I saw it was using all but a few hundred MB of space on that drive, I resized it to 18GB to give Vista more breathing room. If you're just installing a few apps like the Office 2007 Beta to test out Vista you should be fine with a 15GB partition on a clean install.

32-bit. I can see the version 64-bit being a bigger install, but not a whole 5GB larger.

I just installed the 32 bit version today on a 30GB drive and it took up 7GB for the install. It should work, definitely can't hurt to try.
