I perfer a fast system boot up.

Replace your NTLDR and NTDETECT with XP versions and 2000 will boot just as fast as stipped down XP... well faster because it's not as bloated. Again I've never seen a reason to upgrade.. 2k will be obsolete the same day XP becomes obsolete since 2000 is just XP without the spyware/malware/junk.

Here's a fun site for making better installs/slipstreaming etc

yea it'll drop. just remember my 486 and paying 100+ bucks for like another freakin8 or 16mb..i can't remember. now we toss in 1-2gb without a second thought:p

Yes, internet explorer comes with alexia, which is detected by adaware as malware IIRC.

It's meant to prevent piracy and is pretty acceptable.

Sigh, this wrong argument again. See previous corection in previous thread where you brought this up.

To you maybe.. that since I swap stuff almost weekly and teletubbies way too automated interface put me over edge when I tried XP.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not one these hate MS guys I just hate the control being taken from user which XP started to do and bloat....I'll have to move someday and since I game can't do linux so it will probably be win-2003.. The mem managment is far superior to XP&2k from things I've read and they have a nifty tool called windows resource manager to make affinity policies for process and services for high performance wih dual core. And I'm sure it will support directX10 which XP/2000 may not...

Why in the world would you believe that Microsoft would port DirectX 10 to a server operating system and not XP? Hell, in its current state you have to hack the OS just to get DirectX 9 support working.

There is so much bad information out there about Windows 2003 (which also has activation, by the way). Honestly, I'm not sure why people think that a server OS (with all the extra baggage that server services add) costing $500+ is a better option than XP Professional.

And if they port to XP then I'm a happy camper running 2000;)

As far as 2003 I already said why and you can disable services quick with msconfig...

Did you actually spend the money for the OS or are you pirating it?

I agree that win2003 can modded into a great OS, but I doubt most ensible people will pay that much for the improvement.

Windows Server (not the upgrade) is not cheap, and most of the features you are talking about are most likey in the enterprise edition.*

*purely conjecture. I am probably wrong about the specifics when it comes to the versions since I've only setup for people/used enterprise and SMBedition

Every other sentence is conjecture.

Xp activation might be a pain to some, but unless you are working in IT, I see so reason to complain. I have worked in acomp shop and done medium business networking.

Unless you are piriting or unless you are in IT managing more than 20+ machines, it should be a non-issue.

If you change out the motherboard in your pc that often ( 15min at LEAST) then spending 5min on the phone with india should be no big deal.

I never said you did. I said, simply, that windows 2003 is quite a jump in price for consumers or even enthusiasts.

They usually settle for XP + shiny GPUs and CPUs

edit: thanks for the quick reply btw...glad to see software etc still ahs some life in it:D

That's why i hav'nt upgraded yet.. If I did pirate I would not only not be worried about XP activation and just use a corporate version and I would already be using enterprise 03.:) (stripped down of course)

The key is that for the price (especially for students;) ) XP isn't as bad as people like gurck make it out to be.

worst of all he just continues to bash it, resorting to saying that he would go to linux from XP if only he knew more and such.
