Vista Replacement in 2009?

I received my latest MaximumPC magazine today. Vol 13, No. 4, April 2008. On page 9 of their mag they have a little one paragraph blurp about a rumor Vista will soon be replaced. Its titled, "Rumor Mill: Vista Replacement in 2009?" Here is the paragraph word for word:

"According to online sources, Microsoft is pushing up the release of Vista's follow-up, code-named Windows 7, from 2010 to late 2009. These sources claim to have early alpha versions of the nascent OS, leaked by OEMs. The official word from Redmond is "no comment," but we wouldnt be surprised if MS is putting pressure on its dev team to quickly roll out a follow-up to Vista."

Granted its a rumor and should be taken with a heavy dose of salt but if true it kinda makes me think MS isnt happy with Vista's perforamnce and acceptance by the PC community. It kind of reminds me of the Mellenium 2000 fiasco. MS couldnt fix it so they pushed to get XP out as quickly as possible. Now I dont have Vista but I dont think Vista is as bad as ME 2000 was. At least not in its present state with SP1. I know there are others that would disagree with me on that though. During the early months of of Vista's release there was a lot of criticism of Vista. MS has been coming out with monthly updates and fixes lately to make up for its too soon release of Vista. Despite that a lot of people still plan to keep XP for some to come. Many feel there is no good reason to upgrade. Now it seems people may just jump over Vista and go with this new OS. Assuming its good. Granted thats a big assumption. My bet is that they'll rush it out too early too and just upset users even more.

Anyway I thought it interesting so I thought I would share it here.

This is why I stopped reading magazines, they are a bit behind. This is old news. 😛

MS plans for a number of total rewrites for 7, I hear. I'm 100% sure they won't be able to release it to everyone's satisfaction but I hope it hits the ground running, unlike Vista. Personally, I've been using Vista for a month or two and actually like it but it seems (while it's selling just fine) most people just haven't taken to it. MS put a lot of things on the plate that required coordination with software developers that didn't quite fall through, it seems. Like UAC, while it works just fine most people don't make programs with UAC in mind and sometimes it causes prompts when just trying to open a program. Admittedly, those are few and far between. Another thing is DX10. We all know that almost nothing is made with DX10 to this day.

IMO, what MS should do is make Longhorn/Windows 7/Vienna's lifecycle about as long as XP's was. That way they can work out most all the kinks, like they have with Vista, and then just let it ride out success for a while. They can continue to update it in the meantime.

I heard the 2009 drop date before too. I guess we'll see. Regardless of the date I would want them to put in some true features that make it worth upgrading to rather than just pushing it out. I'm fine with Vista just take your time and get it done properly. I would like to see WinFS and getting rid of the archaic code that remains.

Windows 7, the next client release after Vista, is tentatively scheduled for 2010. This will probably be a minor release, similar to the R2 release of Windows Server 2003: Microsoft executives have promised to make Windows client releases more predictable, and so the company will probably move to a pattern of alternating major and minor releases for the Windows client OS, as it has done with Windows Server.

Likely new features in Windows 7 include PowerShell scripting and improvements to new Vista features, such as User Account Control. Windows 7 might include a hypervisor (also planned for Windows Server 2008) to support virtualization. It also might include various Windows Live clients that help users connect to online services?for example, Microsoft has said that the Windows Live Mail client, which connects to various e-mail sources but works best with Hotmail, will replace Outlook Express (which was renamed Windows Mail in Vista). Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 7 will be available in both 32-bit and 64-bit editions.

MS responded to this a while ago. It's more likely Windows 7 will be shipped in 2010 or even 2011 which will put in 4 or 5 years between releases since Vista was released to business partners in 2006.

Didnt MS recently say they wanted to release a new OS every three or four years? I thought I heard something about that. Anyway now that I think about it considering the lag time from when the article is actually written and the time the mag goes to press and arrives to my mailbox its probably 3-4 weeks old at least. Thanks for the updates. 🙂

I'm still really hoping one day windows goes through a clean break the way apple did with OSX. Theres just too much legacy hardware and software to support, and with the future being as web centric and crossplatform as its shaping up, their monopoly status is being threated, and they would do well to shed all that bloat, bugginess and security issues before they have another web backlash like they did with Vista. Xp was and is still loved because it had enough time to evolve out of all the major bugs, and whether or not theres a group of nerds that love it, Vista is not being well accepted by the public, and they cant have that happen with their next OS. Given what Vista had to support (10+ years of legacy), they genuinely did the best job they or anyone else possibly could have on launch - but the task at hand was just impossible, and their next OS will only be worse.

It sounds like that is what they are doing with Singularity.

yes, its old news.

Its about time for a new OS. The 4 weeks i am running Vista on this build are ENOUGH. And i am not even kidding.
