Vista registry

Backup your registry first in case something goes wrong, then double click your .reg file to insert it.

Registry back up is built into windows. You don't need a patch.

To backup:
1. Open the Start menu, select Run, type regedit, and press Enter.
2. Open the File menu, and select Export.
3. Type the name of the backup file in the File name box.
4. Next, in the Export range section, to back up the entire registry, select All and to back up a portion of the registry, choose Selected Branch and type the name of the branch you want to back up in the text box.
5. Select Save to create the backup file.

To restore:
1. Open the Start menu, select Run, type regedit, and press Enter.
2. Open the File menu, and select import and point to the file you exported.

But, like you say, you never messed with the registry before so be forewarned that great damage can be done.

Hey ive never messed with the registry before. i just figured out how to back up my registry. I need to add this patch

http://homepage.eircom.net/~ro...Blog/v8-WMP11-M2TS.reg
how do i do this without screwing it up? What are the steps?

Thanks for any info

Make sure you have restore points turned on (and make one); the suggestions above don't help if you can't boot into your OS and are really only intended for selecting small parts of the registry to back up, not so much the entire thing.

Once you've made a restore point, even if you can't boot into the OS, you can still use the restore point registry backups to get back into the OS (with a bit of commandline work).

Ok I did do a back up. I eventually figured out how to add a new patch. i opened up note pad and copied and pasted the text from the link got. Then saved it as .reg. I then double clicked that reg file and it added the patch. Thanks everyone for the help.
