Vista recognition issues

Vista Ultimate 64bit

Ok, it does not matter what USB device I plug into the back of the computer, Vista will not see it for what it is. For example:

1) FujiFilm FinePix s7000. On my XP machine, it autoplays and I can open it to view folders. Or I can click MY COMPUTER and see it listed as Fujifilm. In Vista, however, it appears no where. And when I look for it in Device Manager, it shows it as a disk drive.

2) Kingston USB Flash Drive. It came with TaxCut software on it. I can plug it into any of my XP machines, and it will autoplay, but on this Vista machine, it doesn?t even see it, except in device manager ... but I cannot access and files on it.

3) Philips PC Camera SPC900NC. In Vista, it is listed in the device manager under Sound, Video and Game Controllers, but no matter what I do, I cannot get it to appear in Control Panel, camera and Scanners.

These are just three examples of what I am experiencing in Vista Ultimate 64bit. To be honest, it really doesn't matter what I plug in the USB port, I cannot get it to be what it is supposed to be.

Suggestions, opinions and advice gladly accepted and appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
🙂 KarenMarie

1: Link, it says
You can use the software on Windows Vista by updating your installed software with the updater which is uploaded in Software Download section
.

3: Drivers can be downloaded from here
Note there a few similar versions so doublecheck your model for exact driver.

3. I got the webcam up and running thru the software provided fron philips. It still will not appear in the scanner/camera area in control panel.

1. I have been working on this for ages and cannot get it to work. The links you provided to me do indeed upgrade to Vista 64 compatibility... that doesn't change anything, however. I still cannot get the machine to see the camera as anything more than just a disk, and I cannot access the media on it. All the upgrader did was make it so the veiwer software was able to run on vista (which is kinda like picasa). It doesn't make the machine see the camera as a camera or give me access to anything. And I gotta say, it was a pita to get it installed, I had to hunt down a disk I have not seen in years, since I bought the camera.

Anyway, it doesn't matter what usb device I plug in. It could be a camera, a USB drive, an external hard drive, or ... whatever. The machine will only show it as a disk and not give me access.

🙁

But, I appreciate your taking the time to provide that info!

Very strange problem,I know you are running Vista as admin so that will not be an issue,I have used a few USB devices on my own Vista x64,x86 that have all worked fine (lucky for me)ie Creative webcam,Olympus C770 digital camera,USB Thrustmaster joypad, Canon USB I4300 printer,4GB Peak Flash drive,USB 2.0 seven port external USB hub,Trust USB Bluetooth,256mb flash drive,Lite-On USB external DVD burner,2GB MP4 player etc... to name a few, however this does not hep you.

I presumed you have installed chipset drivers etc...for your motherboard, last resort is to contact Philips/Fuji....I'm off to work now so shall see if I can dig up some more help/info later for you.

Btw is this with the Gigabyte GA-7NNXP board listed in your rig?...probably would not do any harm to see if latest BIOS has any updates/fixes that are USB related.

Consider downloading and installing SP1 for Vista today.

Then, once updated and stable for a day, go look (again) for updated drivers and applications and all that from your device vendors, windows update, or whatever.

Also try different physical USB ports. Sometimes some of them get a little picky about whether they'll fully work or not.

Also sometimes USB cables can be flaky enough where you get something that SORT OF works but not fully. I've got a stack of recent DVD frisbees to attest to that (bad USB cable on a DVD drive).

Strange... BTW, for "Kingston USB Flash Drive" what happens when you check through Windows Explorer. Do you see a disk drive? what happens when you click on that; does not open up the files?

Check for the installation guide and see if there are any specific guidelines for XP.

1. The gigabyte board.... no, that is another machine. This one is: MSI K8n Neo4 Platinum, Opteron 170, 3x1GB DDR3200, 8800GTX, 2x250GBHDD Sata ... etc.

2. Chipset drivers? MSI has an online auto-updater for drivers and etc. I have run that. It just runs and runs and runs, without actually finding anything. When I look manually, I see only win 2000 and winXP 64 bit. In any case, I don?t see anything about USB in what is available.

3. Yes, I am running as administrator.

4. SP1 for Vista... I have auto-update, would not that have taken care of it?

5. USB Ports... I have tried every USB plug in every USB port and even tried a brand new in sealed package USB cord.

6. Kingston flash drive does NOT show up in my computer/explorer at all. It shows up as Kingston drive in Device Manager and in Disk Management. I cannot see or access any data on there.

Try the Nvidia chipset drivers, thats what I use for my Epox nForce 4 Ultra board, link. .

Remember to remove the old MSI ones(if any are installed) first.

Take a look at this thread if SP1 doesn't fix your issues.

I've been experiencing the same problem with usb storage devices for the last few weeks and have visited numerous forums discussing it. After having no joy I decided to take a look around my system folders and have now got these devices working again. While looking around I discovered 2 points of interest:

In C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository I had two folders named "usbstor.inf" but each one had a different set of numbers attached to the end of the folder name. - could this be where part of the problem lies?

When i looked in my C:\Windows\inf folder i discovered the usbstor.inf and usb stor.pnf files were missing - this definitely had to be an issue.
Once I discovered these anomalies, I proceeded to copy the pnf and inf files from the most recently updated usbstor.inf folder to C:\Windows\inf. I then went back to the update driver wizard, pointed to the inf folder and what do you know but they all started working again.

Also run a google search on "infcache.1". Many people with similar problems delete that file and make Vista rebuild it, seems to work even though a hot fix was supposed to solve the problem. Might help in your case if SP1 doesn't.

I did have two "usbstor.inf" with each one having a different set of numbers attached to the end of the folder name. I did not delete either of them. But I DID have the the usbstor.inf and usb stor.pnf files in C:\Windows\inf. I do not know if I should delete anything, so I just left it alone.

I tried that. It made things worse. It did rebuild. But now, the kingston drive is no longer recognized as a kingston and is just a drive. And it shows up no where else buy device manager.

I looked into the SP1 .... I downloaded 450+ MB only to find it was the 32 bit version, not the 64 bit one. So, I have to see if I can find the 64 bit.

🙁

I had the same issue with my kingston USB drive. I think you have to update Kingston drive software (firmware) for it work in vista

Well guys.... SP1 fixed it.

Thing is, when I first tried to install, I got an error message, so I rebotted and tried again. Installed over night. When I woke up this morning, I was stuck on the welcome screen. Had to force a restart. Which took almost 10 minutes.

But, everything seems to be fine. The camera is working as it should, the Kingston USB Flash drive is seen as it is And the webcam is working just fine, too. (although not under scanners/camera, but who cares?)

I just wonder what was wrong that made that happen.

Anyway, thanks guys!

I appreciare the help.
