Vista RC1 Released

Surprised nobody has posted it here yet, Vista RC1 (yes the real deal, not 5536 the Pre-RC1 build).

5600.16384 is the build for those who care.

I'm sure it wont be long before this build is made public.

I'm pulling it down now, but probably wont have time to do much installations/testing until the middle of next week.

I know MSFT is eager to get bug reports in on this build quickly (so they have enough time to do something about it before RTM) so it wouldnt surprise me if they make it public as early as next week.

The morons need to put these builds up for Technet subscriptions. There's a reason we PAY for that....
You'll get it next week, along with us MSDN subscribers. I'm running the Pre-RC1 build right now (5536), and it's working so well that I can easily wait a few more days.

Meh.......been playing around with Vista.....its much more cumbersome to get things done. From what I can see they've removed (or made it very difficult to gain) access to the "tree" filestructure...as evidenced by a lack of Back/Forward/Up buttons. Its like they're removing that to make their search feature more useful. Bleh. I played around with it for about two hours. Have I missed something? If it weren't for games this would be a horrible upgrade.

QFT. Add to that the fact that Vista runs like dog snot on the latest high-end hardware, uses about 8X the RAM of a trim XP install, comes packaged full of DRM...

I'm relegating Vista to the WinME scrap heap. It's an ugly pig, and no amount of lipstick will change that for me.

In theory, the Vista RC1 is supposed to fix all those nasty approval pops & add many more drivers to the package.

Also - IF you signed up for the purchased CD, Microsoft is supposed to send you a copy of RC1
as a replacement to the Beta that they mailed out.

Don't look for a download of the Vista RC1 to be available through their servers.

Where did you hear that information? All that I've read seems to indicate that RC1 would be available even to people who downloaded beta 2. Do you have any sources to back up the statement that no one of the general public will get RC1 unless they paid for the beta 2 CD?

Funny how in the year I had it, I never had a problem with it, seriously. 😉

Posting from a WinMe box (at my parents' house), on FF 1.5.0.6, with 6 tabs open, while coping a 350MB file to my iPod, while listening to GnR on WMP, while syncing my mail with Thunderbird and it's nevertheless stable and responsive. The machine only has 128MB of RAM, by the way.

WinME is not that bad if you keep it under wraps and spyware-virus free.
