Vista Performance Test with New Build

The ram just seems a little slow, and this is overclocked. It helped the ram out a little from the extra fsb. It seems to be stable at this speed though. I just wanted some opinions overall and maybe about why the ram is slow. My friend has an E6400 system with 2gb and his scores 5.1 on the ram test with the exact same OS.

Here's the lowdown: that performance test means nothing. If you wanted, check timings and such. Could be running your RAM at a lower command rate because you've presumably got 4 DIMMs. Is dual-channel enabled?

Post a CPU-Z screenshot of your CPU tab and of the memory tab. Also a Memset screenshot with the settings left alone would be helpful too.

I guess I figured it out. I'm only running 6gb right now because the board can't support 8gb without a bios update thats not available yet. I took the middle piece out and its running in dual channel now. 5.9 on the memory test in vista now. Anyone know how high the numbers can go on the vista test? Thanks for the help guys!

That test means nothing. With my RAM at DDR2 800 speeds I got a 5.1, with it at DDR 667 speeds I got a 5.6. No timings changed.

Oh, and the test caps at 5.9. All the more reason for it to be meaningless. A decent midrange computer maxes the test out.

When it was released, the test capped out at 5.0. It caps at 5.9 now and the cap is moved higher each time a major new generation of hardware comes out.

Odd.........I've had Vista Ultimate since it was released to retail and the "performance test" caps have always been 5.9....never 5.0

It changes automatically when you download windows updates. I've had Ultimate since last april and my PC registered 5.1 then and it's something like 5.6 IIRC.

Mine was at 5.9 before any update.....and has continued to be at 5.9.....has always been 5.9.

BTW, Roguestar, below is a link to a Microsoft web blog specifically about the Experience Index, dated Sept. 22, 2006, that shows the index indeed topped out at 5.9, even back then.

Microsoft blog about the index from 9/22/2006.

So, your notion that it ever topped out at 5.1 or anything other than 5.9, is indeed incorrect.

Sorry.

This is from that page that describes the top end score level:

The Scale of the Index

The scale of the Windows Experience Index ranges from 1 to 5.9. The higher the score for a particular component area, the better experience you can expect from that area.

5.0 ? 5.9

Fast moving games with amazingly rich graphics, 3D modeling, high-end multimedia and high performance applications.

Top end of the PC market for the Vista time frame.

Ah, my bad. I think I was thinking of the part that mentions that they'll change the cap as newer hardware comes out.
