Vista partition question

I plan to install vista to a new partition. However, I have only one 400Gb HDD (currently
with 4 partitions). Can I create a new partition to allow for Vista, or does the maximum of 4 partition per disk still apply and I have to erase one the 4 existing partitions to install vista?

Hard drives only support 4 primary partitions regardless of the OS(s).

Unless you are already multibooting, you probably only have 2 parttitions now, one primary and one extended with 3 logical paritions inside of it.

That actually leaves you room for 2 more primary partitions but you need to shrink existing partitions to make room
