I do a lot of HD video editing and compositing in After Effects, here's what I'm looking at so far

Core 2 Quad Q8400
GA-EP45-UD3R motherboard
16 GB DIMM DDR2 SDRAM PC6400
NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT 512MB
2X WD6401AALS (640GB SATA300 7200) Hard Drive

Obviously I want to go 64bit but should I spend money on Vista now or go with the Windows7 beta and use the money for a new monitor (dual monitors)?

Go with XP. Then wait a few years after Windows 7 is out of beta and go with that. I always give a windows OS at least 1 year after it's full release before considering it for production use. There is no point of going Vista at this point either because of Windows 7. They will phase out Vista pretty fast I think tbh. That and I wont get into the negative aspects as those are more debatable.

If you go for Win7 beta you still have to buy it by next March. If that isn't an issue I'd go for it. I'd been running it w/o any issue. Before that I was using XP.

Vista X64. Putting betaware on a new production machine is really not a good idea.

You'll eventually be eligible for some sort of discounted upgrade to Win7.

Plus you don't have to reformat and reinstall everything all over again.

If you can deal with reformatting again in a year go with Win7 for sure, if not, go Vista 64.

The decision depends on two factors:

A: How critical is the work you will be doing (is it your primary job?)

B: How much do you like visual effects?

If you answered A as "Critical" then I would go with XPx64 (there is a certain distribution going around that I highly recommend for maximum productivity known as Superior XPx64 the latest release is June, just search thepiratebay.org or demonoid)

Otherwise, if you like fancy effects and are okay with utilizing betaware for critical work (or if it's non-critical) then Win7 ftw. I use Win7 primarily for entertainment, but XPx64 for work as the Superior release is well optimized and maximizes productivity.

EDIT - Don't use VISTA unless you're prepared to optimize it; if you do select Vista best to take a look at blackviper.com good info on speeding up vista

Like was said above - Win 7 RC is probably the pest performer right now - however - if you have to install a lot of software and do a lot of customizing, you might be better off with Vista 64 right now, and then upgrade to Win7 when it hits the street (Supposedly 22 October or thereabouts.)

That way you have an upgrade path where all your software will not have to be reinstalled when you do a Win7 clean install.

What I am doing is using two HDDs in mobile racks. One Vista and the other Win7. That way I can get work done in Vista and play around with 7, with little or no risk.

dont go with the beta go with the release candidate, or if your into pirating following what in64 guys said lol. J/K that was some horrible advice.

RC has been good enough for me, but maybe some stuff wont work for you. Also it seems RTM is due out by Tuesday.

Hey there, I just want to clarify, I do not condone of pirating, just because you can download it from thepiratebay doesn't mean it is cracked software.

It is a corporate volume license and is not warez or that junk. If you are OCD about that sort of thing just change the license to one you have on file.

Apologies for the miscommunication. ;)

I'd go with Vista 64-bit now as it is your primary machine. Although Windows 7 RC is robust and incredibly stable, I would not make it my primary OS on a production box for the simple fact that their doesn't appear to be an upgrade path to the final release and the RC starts shutting down every 2 ours beginning March 1, 2010 and for good on June 1, 2010.
