Vista oem woes

I recently wrecked a motherboard by trying to update the bios. (Thanks to those who recommended flashing a bios through windows... won't do that again). So, I got a new motherboard and CPU and tried booting. Doing this with XP had worked in the past, I expected the same from Vista. No such luck.

So, I tried a repair installation. However, that didn't work. I tried a fresh new installation. Again, it wouldn't install properly.

Then I noticed on the original packaging of the OS this message about OPK. It has something to do with a preinstall. Is this preinstall necessary in order to make an OEM of Vista 64 work?

Thanks.
Merry Xmas, Happy New Years.

If you replaced the mobo with the same one, it should have booted like it did before you messed up the bios, as long as you had all the bios settings the same.

And if you bought another of the same mobo, you cxan hotflash the bad bios chip and put it back into the bad mobo and now have 2 working mobo's

To the original poster: Some of what you are saying does NOT make sense. Vista does not have the option for a "repair install". Does not, will not, can not. This is due to the way Vista is installed (imaging technique).

If you have a Dell computer, and you replaced the motherboard with a non-Dell model, then your Dell version of Vista will not work. Is that what you have done? (You may substitute HP or Compaq or Gateway or ???? in the above sentence.)

Do you have a brand name computer? If so, what make and model?

If not brand name, then what make and model of motherboard (original and replacement)?

You're mistaken. There is a repair install listed as one of the options. So, believe it or not.

OEM activation is tied to the mobo. I have an OEM version of Vista, if I buy a different mobo I need a new copy of Vista. As stated earlier if you have a dell, hp, etc. that Install is tied to the dell\hp\compaq\whatever bios and wont install on a normal (asus, intel, abit, etc.) mobo.
